Tata Nano: Will this Inexpensive, Subcompact Car Impact U.S. Auto Makers?
Will Detroit Make Cars for Low Income Americans?
With the average cost of a new vehicle in the U.S. topping $28,000, a new car is out of reach of many Americans. Many lower-income families buy used cars that lack the newest safety features and often suffer from mechanical problems or low gas mileage. Even the 2008 Chevrolet Aveo5, the most inexpensive car in the U.S. at $10, 030) is out of the reach of some families. If India can make the Tata Nano for $2500, could Ford, Chevy or Dodge engineer a similar car for under $5000?
Another Chevrolet Aveo model, the 2007 LS Sedan has a base MSRP of $12, 010 and comes standard with cruise control, power front seats and an in dash iPod jack. While these amenities are nice and are surprising in such an economy priced car, they aren't really necessary Could Chevrolet strip such niceties from the Aveo and trim the cost to make the car available to low income Americans? Other cars in the $10,000 range include the 2007 Saturn Ion 2 and the Kia Rio. All of the low cost vehicles lack automatic transmissions, but all pass government safety standards and include features, like air conditioning, side curtain air bags, emission systems and radios, that the Tata Nano owners could only dream of.
With a top speed of just over 60 miles per hour, the the two cylinder, 33 horsepower Tata Nano isn't feasible for the U.S. market, but now that Tata has shown it can be done, Ford is said to be working on a subcompact low cost car for U.S. consumers, but has declined to say what price point they are trying to reach. The $2500 price tag touted in recent weeks doesn't include taxes, destination charges and other dealer costs, so the actual price for the Tata Nano will likely be closer to $3000.

The speed limit in the US highway is 70mph, but Nano can run upto 60mph. So, Nano in the US market is almost impossible. However, new car in only $2500 is a way cheap.
i agree that the car will available in only one lakh but in future some priblems are included .first every middle class family buy a car then problem to increase in cars the road problem.second one is place problem.third one is diesel problem.BUT THE COST IS LOW THE PROBLEMS ARE HIGH.
I think that this whole concept of a small affordable, efficient, low-emissions vehicle is a novel idea...how many times have we tried this now??? Either way, I welcome it again. Cudos to India...here is a Tata Motors community for those who are interested...please stop by and post a comment...http://www.trickmytata.com
