Tattoo was the first single that was released from Jordin Sparks' first album, which is self titled. Jordin Sparks is most known for winning the sixth season of American Idol. This song was suppose to be officially released on August 27, 2007, but was leaked four days earlier. This song was written showcase Sparks mid-range vocals. The song is about a relationship that is ending, but the memories that the couple will share will always be on her heart "like a tattoo". Sparks said he loved the song the first time she heard it. She performed this song in the 2007 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

This song has been released five different times to five different countries. First, on September 25, 2007, this song was officially released to the United States and Canada. On March 10, 2008, it was then released to Australia. This song was then released two separate times in the United Kingdom. First, on March 24, 2008, this song was released as a digital download. It debuted as number fifty on the United Kingdom Singles Chart. Tattoo was then re-released on October 20, 2008, where it returned to the charts at spot sixty-four. Germany received this song on October 17, 2008 as a digital download and on a CD. It was not until January 2009 that this song was officially released to Italy.

This song performed very well on the Billboard Charts. It was first released to iTunes. This song reached as high as number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and sixth on the Billboard Pop 100, becoming Sparks first top ten hit. It was also fifth on the Mainstream Top 40, twelfth on the Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks, seventh on Adult Contemporary Tracks, and ninth on the Rhythmic Top 40. It also made it up to number three in the Canadian Hot 100 before it was even released to Canada. It debuted on the Australian Singles Chart as twenty-ninth but made it up to spot number five. The song remained on the chart for twenty-three weeks and was certified as platinum. Other chart performances by this song include reaching as high as nineteenth on the Dutch Top 40, nineteenth on the German Singles Chart, forty-eighth on the Irish Singles Chart, twelfth on the New Zealand Charts, twenty-first on the Romanian Top 100, twenty-sixth on the Swedish Singles Chart, and twenty-fourth on the United Kingdom Singles Chart.
