Tattoos and Piercings: Which One Will You Get?

Kali Copeland
"Did that hurt?" I'm asked that so often that the answer is almost ingrained. "Not as bad as you'd think."

At 32 years of age, I have 3 tattoos and 12 piercings. I have more than most, but there will always be people with more than I have. As for a novice into the body art world, I can only pass on what I know and have observed.

Piercings:

The main thing to remember about a piercing is that it is not permanent. Unlike a tattoo, a body piercing is totally reversible without surgery, and can be accessoried with the rest of your wardrobe.

Before you get a piercing you should discuss your options with a trained professional, he or she will be able to tell you all your options for piercing, and tell you about recovery and care. Do not forget to discuss the shops hygiene protocols with the piercer.

Recovery and care for a piercing ranges. Most are similar to getting your ears pierced, 6-8 weeks to heal with special wash and care instructions. however piercings like the tongue require constant care until healed.

*On a special note: Bellybutton piercings are constantly getting bumped against counters, tables and other things while they heal. Ouch.*

Tattoos:

Tattoos are a wonderful form of artistic expression, but they require surgery to remove. They can however be put almost anywhere. On a downside to tattoos, there are still quite a few employers that do not care for them on an employee.

Before you get a tattoo be sure of what you want and where you want. To help you decide try a temporary tattoo to determine placement and possible type (take your time!).

Most tattoo artists will allow you to design your own tattoo, but go ahead and look through there book if you don't see one that is absolutely right design one that is.

I do not recommend names. I know that getting your girl/boyfriends or spouses name tattooed on is romantic gesture, but on the off chance that things go bad, you could be stuck with the ex's name in your flesh. For the name gesture try a henna tattoo, temporary, but last longer than the gum-ball variety.

*If ticklish, remember to HOLD still.* While they can be quite painful, they can also tickle, depending on the location.

Piercing or tattoo, take your time, the option will still be there tomorrow.
