Tax Free Week 2009: States that Offer Tax Free Shopping

I've come to the conclusion that everything can't be blamed on the economy, and that a giant dip in the economy IS good for certain things. Retail stores have sales constantly, Restaurants have specials all the time, and you now have a permanent excuse not to dish out any unnecessary funds. But to make all of that just a little bit better...is tax free week or weekend. Tax free week(end) is exactly what it sounds like: a holiday where you don't have to pay tax on certain retail items during the period of time. This is a list of the states in the US that offer tax free weekends, and what items this tax discount applies to.

Alabama: August 7-9
Clothing under $100 transaction, School Supplies under $50 transaction, Books under $30, and computers or related equipment under $750.

Connecticut: August 15-22
Clothing and Shoe transactions under $300

Georgia: July 30 - August 2
Clothing under $100 per transaction, School Supplies under $20 per transaction and Computers or related equipment under $1500.

Iowa: August 7-8
Clothing and Shoe transactions under $100

Louisiana: August 7-8
All purchases under $2,500, with the exception of prepared meals, services, and vehicles

Mississippi: July 31- August 1
Clothing and Shoe transactions under $100

Missouri: August 7-9
Clothing under $100 per transactions, School supplies under $50 per transaction and computers as well as related equipment under $3500.

New Mexico: August 7-9
Clothing under $100 per transactions, School supplies under $15 per transaction and computers under $1000, as well as related equipment under $500.

North Carolina: August 7-9
Clothing and shoe transactions under $100, School supplies under $100, Computers under $3,500 and related equipment under $250. Also includes sports and sporting equipment under $50.

Oklahoma: August 7-9
Clothing and shoe transactions under $100.

South Carolina: August 7-9
The tax free weekend applies to clothing, shoes, computers and equipment, and school supplies of any price.

Tennessee: August 7-9
Clothing and school supplies under $100 per transaction, and computers under $1,500.

Texas: August 21-23
Clothing and shoes under $100 and Backpacks under $100.

Virginia: August 7-9
Clothing and Shoes under $100 and School supplies under $20 per transaction.

Washington DC: August 1-9 and November 27- December 6
Clothing and Shoes under $100 per transaction, School supplies under $100 per transaction.

And as always, the lucky residents of Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no sales tax throughout the year, and residents of New York have no sales tax on purchases under $110.
