In order to fix the economy, major changes needs to take place. Retailers and corporations need to take social responsibility. They have an obligation to the consumers and workers whose pockets are affected by their actions. Politicians need to pass legislation that promotes big business while simultaneously protecting consumers from predatory practices. Congress should focus on passing legislation that promotes job creation. The American education system also needs to be altered in order to fix the economy. A more qualified workforce would aid are economy by increasing productivity. Legislators should strive to make the gap between the rich in the poor smaller. The economy will be better off if the needs of all Americans are considered, instead of a small percentage. The American economy would be better off if greed in Washington and on Wall Street was reduced. Franklin D Roosevelt shared the same sentiments when he stated, "We have always known that heedless self-interest was bad morals; we now know that it is bad economics." Preying on consumers can only last for so long.
Consumers also need to take responsibility. More caution should be taken before making large purchases. The American economy should not be based on credit. Americans should start buying only what they can afford. Credit cards and high interest loans should be last resorts. If someone can't afford to put down 15-20 percent down on a home, they should not buy it.
Tax rebates may serve as aid to some of America's families, but it may also be used to accumulate more debt. Some consumers may use it as a coupon towards a large purchase. Whatever the rebate doesn't cover will simply be placed on a credit card. Retailers like Circuit City are already targeting consumers with discounts. This is wrong! How can someone improve their financial situation by accumulating assets that don't increase wealth?
This money should be saved or invested! Americans don't have enough money in the bank. Most people would struggle to meet ends meet if they lost their jobs. Families should make the most out of their rebate checks. Use the money to pay off high interest credit card debt, or put it in a savings or investment account. Don't go out and buy more unnecessary material possessions. The American economy will never reach its full potential if it continues to prey on the financially irresponsible and uneducated.
