Tax Season is Upon Us

Matt Parson
Many people are beginning to get sick to their stomachs and it will get even worse as February rolls around and people begin receiving their W2's. Tax season makes many people nervous, sick, unhappy, and stressed. But, it doesn't have to be like that. Tax season should be a happy time where people look forward to receiving a nice refund to go on vacation, pay off some credit card debt, or just build their retirement funds.

The biggest problem that most people have with tax season is that they failed to prepare for it throughout the year. Many people go to H&R Block expecting the people there to find this huge return out of nothing. Then, when they end up having to pay taxes, they get upset and say they will never go back there again. The trick to getting a large refund is to prepare for it throughout the entire year. Starting in January or February, people should have a budget on what they will be doing throughout the year so that they do not owe any taxes at the end of the year.

There are hundreds of tax breaks people can take. One misconception that many people have is that tax breaks are only for millionaires. Tax breaks were designed to help the middle class be able to get their money back that they pay on their income tax and to help the economy grow. Simple taxes like the moving tax was designed so that people would be able to buy new houses if they were offered another job without having a huge tax to pay when they sale their old house.

Sometimes it pays off to get a little bit of advice from a CPA or an H&R Block representative. These people know how to prepare for a tax season all year long and will usually do tax projections every month so that people know the direction they are headed in. If something comes up in September where it looks like someone will be owing taxes, they can give you three to four months to prepare for it and have money when the tax is due.

The most important aspect of tax season is to be relaxed and understand that there are many ways to deal with taxes. It is not a big ugly monster like everyone makes it out to be. Get some advice from a professional or even someone who knows a lot about taxes. Any little bit can help. Read up on the new tax laws that come out for each and just be more prepared as April 15th comes around.
