Tax Websites: Taxslayer.com is Easy and Cheap!

AC Writer
I've been using Taxslayer.com for several years now, and I've found it to be one of the easiest online tax software packages available. There are a couple of different versions of the Taxslayer.com software available on the company's web site, the classic version and the premium version. For those with simple filing needs, the classic version is the way to go. Users are able to prepare both federal and state income tax returns for free in an easy step-by-step format that is very user friendly. While the preparation of tax documents is done at no cost to the user, there is a fee charged if one chooses to electronically file through Taxslayer.com or use the print feature to obtain a hard copy of the prepared tax documents. For the classic version, that fee is a pretty low $9.95.

If your tax filing needs are a bit more complicated, you can choose Taxslayer.com's premium tax software version. This edition performs the same functions as the classic version, but Taxslayer has added additional options including a deduction finder, a life events wizard, audit assistance, priority technical support, and a message center. These additional features bump the Taxslayer.com price up to $19.95, still competitive with many other tax preparation software products.

Other features of the Taxslayer.com web site and tax preparation software include an extensive help center that allows you to enter questions or follow links to answers concerning the software, and a video demonstration on the main web page so that you can get a feel for the software before deciding whether or not you want to use it. The help center also provides general information about tax preparation, including this year's Economic Stimulus Act, the Internal Revenue Service's schedule for issuing tax rebate checks, federal and state tax tips, basic information on electronic filing, and reject codes.

There is also a tax calculator that allows you to quickly enter information about filing status, income, deductions and credits to get an estimated tax refund, or an amount for the taxes you may owe. The tax calculator uses the preliminary 2008 tax tables for its calculations. One word of warning: you do need a java-enabled browser to use the tax calculator, but Taxslayer.com provides a link to the Java software in case you need to download it.

An added bonus is offered by Taxslayer.com for members of the U.S. military: you can file your taxes electronically or print your tax documents free of charge. In sum, I've found Taxslayer.com to be extremely easy to use and very cost efficient. I recommend it to anyone interested in filing their taxes electronically.
