TaxCut by H&R Block

Free Tax Service for Active Duty Military

Are you a member of the U.S. Military? Have you filed your tax return this year? There are programs for military to file for free. This is the one my family used this year.

TaxCut by H&R Block offers their free basic service on their website to military members. This service usually costs $9.95. Active Duty members must first be a logged in member of Military OneSource. Once becoming a member there, follow the tax link and become a member of TaxCut. If you have used H&R Block the year prior or if you have your information saved on your computer you can upload your previous year's tax return information to this years return. This will obviously speed up the process of completing your tax return.

Even if you don't have your previous filing to transfer, TaxCut is so simple to use. H&R Block really did make this program user friendly. The website will walk you through every detail step by step. It tells you where to find what they are looking for on your W-2's as you input your information.

As your return is being built, TaxCut is pre-checking for deductions such as Earned Income Credit making it easier and quicker to file. There is a helpful frequently asked question section that runs along the right side of the page in case you need a little extra help.

When your return is finished, H&R Block checks over your return for errors, if it passes the TaxCut inspection, it then gets sent to the IRS for approval. You have the choice to either print out and mail your tax refund or you can electronically file (e-file). There are no extra fees to e-file.

Once you finish your Federal Income Tax Return, you will be prompted to start your State Income Tax return. Whether or not you need to file state taxes depends on many different factors. Your home of record may play into this as some states don't have a state tax. Also, if you are stationed in a state that does charge a state tax and you or your spouse work another job outside of the military, you will need to file a State Income Tax return regardless of your home of record. State tax filing is also free of charge when using TaxCut basic.

We were impressed with the simplicity of the program and hope it is brought back next year.
