TaylorMade R9 Driver Review

MikeBabjak
I always am amazed at the fact that TaylorMade Golf can bring a few new drivers to the market every year and still have customers to buy them! Every time I turn my had they are launching a new driver, fairway wood, iron or golf ball. They make excellent equipment and always have, but I still wonder, especially in this economy when the consumer is going to say "uncle"!

Not any time soon it would appear, with the new TaylorMade R9 driver.

The TaylorMade R9 is a totally new animal in the world of drivers. The reason for this is that now, not only can you change the weighting of the club head to help move the ball, but you can also adjust the face angle and lie angle for even more options! How many more options? Up to 75 yards in side-to-side trajectory change says TaylorMade.

The club head is also hot and sexy! It' has a very clean, classic look that all golfers can appreciate, and hits the ball a mile. The inverted cone face design that has been at the heart of most TaylorMade driver heads as of late is back to add more pop at impact, and all the external and internal weighting make this a very accurate driver as well.

I spent a little extra time with this driver simply because there are so many options to choose from! I tried to move the head into little bit of a fade position and hit a nice little cut. I then moved the weight screws around and that little cut turned into a bigger cut! Same with a draw, high and low ball flights! This club is every bit as good as advertised, and when you put it down behind a ball, it's going to be hard for you to put it down as this thing looks better than it plays! There was not one shot that I could not hit with this driver given the right head angle and weighting, but that is the catch. You can't adjust it during your round of golf! All this means is that you need to get to the range and find what swing you've brought with you that day to take advantage of this beast on the course.

My theory on these clubs is this, a closed or open face can help yes, moving weights can help yes, but if you are marginal off the tee and don't always know where it's going, all the features in the world are not going to make a whole lot of difference until you find a repeatable swing for yourself.

All that said, this is a heck of a club for those who like to tinker, need a face that's more open or closed than you can get off the rack, and for those who like a classic head shape all rolled into one!

I'm going to be reviewing the fairway woods next, along with a few new goodies from TaylorMade.

Stay Tuned!
