Te Ten Best "Cold" Songs

Doug Poe
I walked out this morning and it hit me. The chill nearly took my breath, which I could clearly see drifting from my mouth. Temperatures that hover around thirty or forty degrees do not really faze me, but when they dip below twenty I certainly notice.
Once I had the car defrosted and backed out of the driveway, I looked for a CD to put in the stereo. I tried to think of songs that would be appropriate to listen to when it is cold outside. A few titles came to mind, and soon I had a list of songs with cold in their titles.
The list is printed below, but in reality I chose to play none of those that morning. Instead I dug up songs such as "Summertime" by Coltrane Motion, "Sunshine on My Shoulder" by John Denver, "Summer in the City" by Lovin' Spoonful, and other tunes about warmth.

10."You've Got a Cold" by 10cc: It's a zany but melodious track from the excellent Deceptive Bends album. The pop rhythm is, shall I say, contagious, backing lyrics that begin with "Your nose is running."

9. "Selfless, Cold, and Composed" by Ben Folds Five: This is just one of the beautifully depressing ballads ("Brick" and "Smoke" are a couple of the others) on Whatever and Ever Amen. Folds is known for pounding the piano, but he treats his keys delicately on this track about withdrawal.

8."Cold as Ice" by Foreigner: The tune is from the band's self-titled debut, back when they actually had a fresh exciting blend of hard and soft rock.

7. "Stone Cold Crazy" by Queen: It is a fast-paced electric rocker from the band's best album Sheer Heart Attack. Its lyrics about an outlaw would make a perfect folk song.

6. "She's So Cold" by Rolling Stones: Emotional Rescue was a huge letdown for me, but this one track made it worth the price of the entire album. The jaunty, naïve beat complements Mick Jagger's breathy, eager vocals.

5. "Cold Morning Light" by Todd Rundgren: While not the best thing from Something?Anything, this track has all the attractive elements of hits such as "Hello It's Me" and "I Saw the Light."

4."Cold, Hard Truth" by George Jones: The title track from Jones' comeback album after his nearly fatal car crash in 1999 showcases his deep tenor. The accident seems to have made his delivery more sincere than anything he had done the previous decade.

3."Cold Bead" by Johnny Flynn: It is one of the dozen modern British folk songs on A Larum, which features old-time folk music with modern, often cryptic, ruminations.

2. "Cold, Cold Heart" by Hank Williams: This country classic is one of Hank's greatest songs. You can hear him pleading with that trademark southern accent.

1. "Cold Ethyl" by Alice Cooper: This ode to necrophilia is really the last rock song that Cooper made. The rest of Welcome to My Nightmare is soft pop, as are all of the follow up albums.
