If you love tea, this can be a fun experience. If you are new comer, this can turn out very interesting. Open your eyes (and your palate, of course) to a whole new world (...of tea).
Before you start going to the market or the tea stores and frantically choose thousands of different teas home, stop for a moment and think about this.
There are 2 things that would keep you from frustration are: patience and preparation. Just as Benjamin Franklin said: "When you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail"...
Tea blending tips
One of the important tea blending tips is that you have to have an adequate sense of how different teas such as green, black, and white taste and look.
It's very difficult to create a combination if you don't know what your options are. Some more experienced blenders can even distinguish teas from different regions like Darjeeling, Assam, Keemun, and Ceylon...
So if you don't have a clue of how different tea taste, it's a good idea to buy small quantity of different type of tea and try them. You should make notes on how different tea taste, the color, and the texture.
After you have tasted a few different teas and kind of have an idea the characteristics of each, it's time to answer a few questions before moving on. Look at your notes on each tea and ask yourself questions like how do I want my blend to taste like, how it would look, what's the color?...It might takes some time but this process is well worth the time. Why? Because if you don't have any clue how your blend is going to be like, you will be totally confused when you try different combination of tea.
Then if you finally realize you like certain blend after you have try ten combinations of teas, you couldn't remember that were the components of that blend...
So it's also a good idea to be a little organized in your notes. This will save you some time when you want to go back and improve your own blend or create new one.
A little suggestion would be to have columns marked tea name, leaf color, fragrance, taste, other characteristics....When you know what do you want, brew small cups of different teas and set them in front of you. Get another empty cup, get a spoon and try to combine 2 kinds at one time. Get another cup or rinse the cup for another trial because the residue of previous trial can affect your judgment of the taste. When you reach a blend of interest, keep the combination; gradually add other kinds of tea or herbs to see if you can improve it better.
The key is to find the best blend that provides all of the essence of its parts. If you fail the first time, try; try again, until you found the right one.
One of the critical tea blending tips is to take notes. We don't stress this point enough. If you don't, you will have to start all over again. If you already have a favorite blend in mind, that will save you some work. You can do a bit of research online to see what kinds of tea are included in your blends. You can buy the blend's ingredients and several different ingredients.
You can vary your favorite blend a bit to add some twist to it. If you feel creative, you can even try adding some fruit or herbs into your blend. But please make sure you are healthy enough to consume the herbs and tea. People often overlook this issue and it can turn out to be quite dangerous. Final tea blending tips is that a kind of tea can be a bit different if bought from different store or at different times. This may or may not affect the taste of your blend. But if it does, don't be afraid to adjust the amount a bit.
If you have successfully created your first signature blend, why not start a second one. The second time around will be much easier than the first because you already know what to do and has somewhat a momentum for creativity.
Tea blending
Tea blending began when people want to find a combination of existing teas that would give an exceptional yet distinguished taste.
Different teas taste quite differently and if the combination isn't right, the blend isn't successful.
Thus today popular blends of tea can be viewed as the work of arts for the blenders must work to not only brings the tastes but also the textures and the colors of different teas together.
There must have been lots of trials and errors. Creating new blends can be the work of tea lovers as well as tea sellers. In the business world, one of the important things is to have a constant supply of the goods that you are selling. If not, you can easily lose your customers to your competitors. Thus, tea sellers must make sure that they always have large quantity of different teas stocked on the shelves.
However, there is one problem. Tea is a seasonal commodity. Different kinds of tea are available at different time of the year. So to keep the supply constant, tea sellers have to rely on different blends of tea. What they would do is to obtain a large selection of teas. They would have to create a tea catalog to create different blends of tea. The important thing is to be able to create a blend using several different combinations of teas.
For example, a seller creates blend A, B, and C that give similar taste. If one of the tea from A is unavailable during a period of time, he can switch to blend B or C so to keep his customers satisfied. This isn't cheating. It's just a extension of the supply and demand rule in business.
Flavored tea blending...
Often, people would blend different kinds of tea together using strong teas like Darjeeling or Ceylon tea as the tea bases. But gradually, they want to expand the varieties of tea blends by including flavored blends using fruits, flowers, and herbs. Some of the common ingredients for flavored tea blends include jasmine blossoms, rose petals, ginger, and lychee fruit. These ingredients are added to dry with tea so their fragrance can be added on to the tea leaves.
If not using real fruits and flowers petals, the manufacturers can use natural extract to spray on the tea leaves to produce the same effects. There are different blends of flavored tea in the market. If you want to try at blending different teas at home, you can buy individual flavored teas and test some combination. You may even find your own signature blend to wow your family and guests. But keep in mind that blending tea takes a lot of work.
Professional blenders have to taste numerous of different teas and remember each of them in order to create a blend that's excellent in taste and beautiful in color. But hey, that shouldn't stop you to take a shot at tea blending. Everything needs luck and luck might just come and knock on the door...
