Teach Yourself Thai; Is it Possible to Learn Thai Yourself Without a Teacher?

Garro
It is possible to teach yourself Thai, but for most of us it is not an easy path to follow. I have devoted almost eight years to my quest to learn Thai language by myself and it really has been a case of two steps forward and one step back. Maybe this is because I'm particularly bad with languages or maybe it also has something to do with the fact that it is just not such an easy language to learn. The good news is that you will make progress if you persist in your attempt to teach yourself Thai; it will likely take you a long time though. I am quite happy with my ability to read Thai script, and my vocabulary is quite large, but my spoken Thai is still not as fluent as I would like. This likely has a lot to do with the fact that I much prefer to read Thai than speak it.

The good thing about any attempt to teach yourself Thai is that there are many good ways to learn Thai online. There really has never been a better time to learn Thai language, or indeed any language. Every month there seems to be new resources which focus on helping you to learn Thai online; you can now not only find great websites but also podcasts, twitter resources, online courses, and endless video on YouTube. Much of this content is free and of good quality. If you are wise it will be possible to learn Thai onlinewithout spending a penny; you could nearly even get away without even buying a book.

The one problem with any attempt to learn Thai online or through books and audio is that there just are too many options. The wisest thing to do here is devise a plan about how you are going to approach the whole thing. The first part of any plan should be an assessment. What is your final goal? If you want to be a well-rounded Thai speaker then you need to focus on the four parts of speaking; reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Many people who decide to learn Thai language by themselves choose to focus only on speaking and listening; I think that this is a shame, but the end the decision must come from you. Once you have decided on your aims then you can then make your plan. It is possible to begin learning the four language skills in tandem, and this seems like the best idea.

There are podcasts or computer courses available which will provide a suggested course of learning; the best of these cost a bit of money. If you are thinking of joining a ' learn Thai online' course then research it carefully before giving any money; most offer free demo lessons. If you are savvy enough on the internet you will find plenty of free resources to keep you going.

The most important thing with any attempt to teach yourself Thai is that you just keep at it. If you continue to practice then you will get better. Don't give up; you may not see improvements every day or even every week, but every year you will be better than the last year.
