Teacher, Amy Beck, Admits to Having Sex with 14-year-old Student

Amy Beck Turns Herself In

You have to wonder how frequently our news headlines will carry stories marked by teachers having sex with their students. Earlier today, and according to the Burbankleader.com, Amy Victoria Beck, a Burbank Unified School District teacher, turned herself into police and confessed to having sex with a 14-year-old student. Beck was subsequently arrested by the Burbank Police and charged with 5 counts. While Amy Beck certainly did not wait for her indecent recreational activities with the young student to surface, the apparently increasing trend of teachers having sexual relationships with students is absurd. Burbank Police report that Amy Beck surrendered herself after being overwhelmed with guilt. If anything, at least Beck isn't holding out innocence or attempting to defend her acts of indecency.

Regardless, I find it extremely difficult to wrap my mind around this recent Amy Beck scandal and similar stories in the past. What drove Beck or certain teachers, most of whom are generally fair looking, to resort to young students for sexual gratification? How can they possibly justify the act? While the sexual encounters are typically consensual and some blame must, therefore, still fall on the students, it is ultimately the teacher who is professionally and legally entrusted with the responsibility of taking care of students. Although the circumstances leading up to the sexual encounters have not been disclosed, Burbank Police have questioned the student with whom Amy Beck admitted having sex with. According to reports, the student, who is 15 now but was 14 at the time, explained the sexual acts with Amy Beck to have occurred between March and September 2009.

A beloved and respected English and Social Science teacher at David Starr Jordan Middle School for 10 years, Amy Beck resigned without explanation on Friday, much to the surprise and shock of her colleagues and students. Though her resignation is now clear, the Amy Victoria Beck scandal and the circumstances behind and leading to the event may remain vague for sometime.

Well, from a young person that has recently left school, I don't see this as a big deal. If he didn't want it, he could of said no at any point. Why did he let this go on... If it were my son I would be upset for him sleeping with his teacher, but I would lose my mind if the sexes were swapped.

I heard about this on the news. Terrible.

I agree with Dan and Jennifer, too. Wonderful article on a not-so-wonderful topic. I also agree that the student should not be blamed. The teacher is the adult and should have the scruples to know right from wrong.

I think Jennifer is right. Why is there a difference in terminology for men and women? Great report!

This teacher, and the others who have done he same are just plain pedophiles. I thinbk it's odd that if it were a man teacher they would rightly be called a predator and a pedophile yet a woman doing the same thing, while being "branded" as odd or scandalized, the words pedophile and predator usually aren't heard.

At no point is it the fault of the student. I teach middle school, and it is a very complicated time for students...they are just beginning to explore their sexuality. Many of us have had crushes on our teachers. Really, did we really understand what was going on? I recently had a student tell another student that he was going to marry me. Take that seriously?? He's a kid! If these people were not teachers, they'd be called sex offenders and pedophiles. Don't let them hide behind the respectability of their careers. It gives the rest of us teachers a bad name.
