Teacher Amy Beck Charged for Sex and Oral Sex with Student
According to CBS News/AP, Amy Beck admitted to having sexual relations with the student. The boy confirmed that these acts occurred between March and September of 2009. Amy Beck is being held on $400,000 bail and will be arraigned on Wednesday for four counts of unlawful sex with a person under 16 and one count of oral copulation with a person under 16.
Amy Beck, 33, is a married mother of three children. She faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.
One has to wonder why there are so many cases of inappropriate teacher/student relations. In a way, teachers serve as a student's parent away from home, so it's obviously a gross breach of trust to abuse that relationship.
Yet literature and society have a way of romanticizing teacher/student relationships. In Little Women, Professor Bhaer is a wise and benevolent character who eventually marries the heroine (though to be fair, he didn't teach Jo in a classroom setting). And in Anne of Green Gables, nobody found it objectionable that Mr. Phillips was courting Priscilla Andrews.
And in May 2009, a Seattle bar hosted a "Hot for Teacher" night hosted by Mary Kay Letourneau and her former student Vili Fualaau. According to AP, the bar owner argued that she had already served her sentence and that they deserved to have some fun on a Saturday night.
With so many cases of teacher/student misconduct on the rise, it's especially important for teachers to take precautions to ensure the safety of the students. Such precautions can include leaving the door open during office hours and not meeting with students outside the classroom unless it's to discuss course material. It also helps to keep parents in the loop about what material is being covered and what goes on in the classroom. This helps to assure parents that their kids are safe and in good hands.
Hopefully cases like Amy Beck will not become too commonplace in our classrooms.

The motive behind the action is important. Why did she do that? For her own pleasure? For excitement and challenge? It doesn't look like it was for the service of the student. Even if it was lawful, she still did something inappropriate since she was still married. And we have to understand some relationships are very psychological and the impact of those relationships lasts and affects human behavior in the individual growth. To have sex with another same age student and to have it with a teacher or motherly figure or someone least likely have totally different impacts on someone who is growing up trying to be a man and find his own identity. It is very unhealthy. I can already see it happening in this student's mind when he is trying to figure out what is right and wrong from this relationship now that she is in jail. Apparently, the kid didn't come forward with the sex allegations...SHE DID. He's instantly moved into God status for banging this broad. I'd give a weeks pay to throw it in her...3 kids, married and all. And I don't want to hear women say "He's still a child, it's not right what she did to him!!!" BULLSHlT! When I was 14, I was in sound mind and would have done the same thing. I feel like such a loser not having sex till I was 17...or at least making a move on one of my hot substitute teachers back in the day. I could have at least tried but I was a scared little punk!!!

why is this such a big deal? if I got to bang a hot lady at that age my teen years would have been much less depressing. don't forget people use to get married and have children at that age, that's our natural inclination you know and potentially the reason why so many teenagers feel alone and depressed. what gives you the audacity to outright dismiss hundreds of thousands of years of evolution?
