Teacher Appreciation Week: Recognizing the Importance of Our Educators

J Julian Hill
The first full week of May has been designated Teacher Appreciation Week by the National PTA. This week is a great time to honor the dedicated men and women who work so hard to inspire and educate our children.

The National Education Association began celebrating National Teacher Day around 1944. In 1980 congress declared March 7 National Teacher Day. The NEA continued to celebrate on the first Tuesday of March. In 1985, the National PTA began Teacher Appreciation Week. In response, the NEA chose to make the Tuesday of Teacher Appreciation Week, National Teacher Day.

Every year the National PTA creates resources to assist local PTA groups in creating events to recognize and honor their teachers. This year, Teacher Appreciation Week is May 5 - May 9, 2008. The PTA has numerous suggestions for recognizing Teacher Appreciation Week.

Teachers often feel undervalued in our world. Large classroom sizes and low pay can make teaching a very stressful job. Its important to show appreciation for these professionals that are dedicated to helping educate our next generation. A week gives many more opportunities to celebrate this very important profession.

In my past, a number of teachers have inspired me. Those teachers that have had the greatest impact on me, encouraged me to pursue my interests. My second grade teacher, for example, encouraged my interest in writing by letting me publish a newspaper for our class. A number of my other teachers, varied the curriculum of our class based on our interests. This guided learning style has helped me greatly in my life as it gave me a great ability for learning on my own.

This year do something special during Teacher Appreciation Week to show how valuable our teachers are. Everyone has had a teacher that inspired them. A week dedicated to recognizing teachers is a great way to recognize this. Check with your local PTA and see how you can help!
