Teacher Penalized for Admitting Her Past

Annie Jean Brewer
In a story straight out of the dark ages, Melissa Petro, an elementary school teacher in the Bronx has been forced to resign after writing an article openly admitting that she had been a sex worker for three months when she was a student.

Three months of her life, a life that was years past and she is condemned in her present. Does anyone have a scarlet letter they want to brand on her forehead?

This woman was not moonlighting as a sex worker as she taught her students. She was not encouraging students to engage in this behavior--in fact she states that it was "physically demanding, emotionally taxing and spiritually bankrupting," and that she stopped it after a brief 3 months. That hardly sounds like a glowing recommendation of the sex trade to me!

While you are busy lambasting her for being such a horrible person that she DARE have a past, why don't you go open your own closets and look at the skeletons within? Take a good hard look at them--I dare you. Now, after seeing the filth you have done in your youth, please tell me what gives you the right to condemn her for one single mistake?

The only crime she committed was having the balls to be open and honest about her past and yet the hypocrites of the world, whom of course have NO past at all feel they must condemn her because she is "dirty."

You know what? This simply shows how stupid and hypocritical the world is. Instead of praising her for leaving that lifestyle behind and being strong enough to admit it, she is condemned. She has lost the career she worked so hard for simply because we think we have the right to judge her. People of New York, you should ALL be ashamed!

I don't judge you Melissa. I applaud you for your courage to be open and honest in this matter. Unfortunately the world took a huge step backwards with the wrong that has been committed onto you and I sincerely hope that you blast those pompous morons with every word you type.

I also urge you to contact Norma Jean Almodovar, a former LAPD police officer who became a sex worker and speaks out now about the sex industry. She may know of some way to help, as she was shafted by the bureaucracy as well.

Never did I believe I would see American citizens condemning a person for having a past and the courage to admit it. This is hypocrisy at its best.

We know all too well that if a woman gets caught with a 'past,' her new life and career are toast, but if a governor gets caught with one of US, even though he may resign in disgrace, he may end up with his own cable talkshow...
Or if he is a family values senator from, say Louisiana, he gets reelected and sent back to DC to represent all the other family values constituents in his district. However, if one of US moves on after being a sex worker for a NY minute, we are not ever allowed to have a new life, regardless of how we present our sex work past.
And yet we are told that prostitution ought to remain against the law because all prostitutes are victims of exploitation... or that we have no choices... and society seems hell bent on making certain that we never have any choices ever again!
As they say- "once a whore, always a whore, but once a client, next stop- your own talkshow!" Ah, life!

What, is she supposed to hide what she did in the past? Is this seriously the dark ages? It is the past, we learn from our past--but we shouldn't have to hide it like it is dirty or something. That is preposterous.

Your past goes with you, but hard to believe she couldn't be forgiven:)

America itself has a past as a whole. We were the unwanted, the destitute, the way too uptight and CRIMINALS! I cannot fathom why people want to puish others for doing the right thing but, that is what they do. Let's hear it for "justice and fair policies" in America! While we are flaying the teacher for her activities.. why don't we flay our politicians for practicing their own particular brand of whoring! No one says or does anything about *that*! Freakin hypocrites!

btw this happened months ago. i understand why she lost her job. seriously didn't she think writing about it, people would read it?

I don't agree with their tactics at all Deneale! We ALL have a past of some sort, the fact that we are able to overcome it and improve ourselves should be a cause of congratulation, not condemnation. I just could not let her go unnoticed.

Seriously, who are we to throw stones at this woman?

WOW! I reposted this on my twitter and my facebook. This was eye opening, thanks for writing it and sharing it. Unbelievable. We have all made our fair share of mistakes. And she has bettered her life now, only to be punished as if she were committing murder? I dont agree with these tactics here. I mean, do you? Thank you for writing this and sharing it, seriously!
