Unit Of Study: Compound Words

Behavioral Objective: The students will be able to show an understanding of compound words through multi-media (pictures and print).

Aim: How do we form a compound word?

Motivation: I will have 10 labeled pictures taped to the board. As a beginning activity the students will match up the pictures to form a compound word. I will then call for volunteers to come to the board and move the pictures around to form the correct compound word.

1. school + house = schoolhouse
2. lunch + box = lunchbox
3. rain + bow = rainbow
4. tooth + brush = toothbrush
5. basket + ball = basketball

Procedure:
1. First we will do the motivational activity.
2. Then we will discuss the activity.
3. As background knowledge we have been learning about compound words as a thematic unit of studt for the past few days.
4. For this lesson the students will be taking part in an informal assessment to determine their understanding and grasp of compound words.
5. The activity the students will be taking part in is to create a learning center activity for follow up and reinforcement. I will explain that a learning center is a great resource to go for individual and independent help.
6. The steps for the activity will be:
* To sperate the class into groups of two.
* Each person will take out a piece of paper and make a list of compound words they learned from the week.
* I will be walking around and monitoring the work of each group offering praise.
* When completed I will pick volunteers to go to the board and make a master list of compound words.
* The partners will write one part of the word on a white index card and the other half of the word on a blue index card.
* I will call volunteers to the board to draw a square around one part of the word and then the other part of the word to seperate the compound word.
*I will give the students about 20 minutes to complete the activity.
*In conclusion the students will share their experience during the activity and summarize what they have learned.

Vocabulary:
school
rain
house
bow
lunch
tooth
box
brush
basket
ball

Materials:
blackboard, chalk, loose-leaf paper, pen/pencil, index cards, pictures

Homework: Either draw or bring in pictures from your list of compound words you created with your index cards.

Higher Order Questions:
1. What makes up a compound word?
2. Can you think of any compound words that are not on our list?

Follow-Up: The students will bring in their pictures and we will have a share the next day.

Evaluation: The class activity is the evaluation (informal assessment) of the Compound Word Unit of Study.

Standards We Are Approaching:
Standard 1 - Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding. They will be following directions and completing an activity.
*Read - The students will read the list of compound words from the board and their papers.
*Write - The students will write their own list of compound words.
*Listen - The students will listen to the directions and listen to each other.
*Speak - The students will recite their list of comound words.

I will make sure to call students to the board.
I will give directions both verbally and written.
