Teachers Lesson Plan "A Mountain Rescue"

Length of Lesson - 2 periods 42 minutes each = 84 minutes total

Objectives of Lesson - The students will be able to:

Identify problems and solutions (knowledge - Bloom's Taxonomy)

Predict what will happen next (comprehension - Bloom's Taxonomy)

Debate whether or not the character made the right decision (analysis - Bloom's Taxonomy)

Learn about pronouns (grammar component)

Work in flexible grouping (cooperative learning)

Motivation - The students will be shown pictures of mountain climbers. They will answer the following higher order thinking skills questions:

Do you think mountain climbing looks fun?

What would be the best/worst things about mountain climbing?

Can you describe the picture?

Would you like to climb a mountain? Why or why not? Explain your answer.

Standards -
1 Students will listen, speak, read, and write in English for information and understanding.
Performance Indicators - 1,2,6,9,13

2 Students will listen, speak, read, and write in English for literary response, enjoyment, and expression.
Performance Indicators - 2,4,5,6,9

Materials - High Point text Level A, High Point Practice Book Level A, Computer with Internet Access, Encyclopedias, library books, activity sheets, pens. The following websites: Aconcagua.com, Denali for Kids, Surviving Denali, Elbrus and the Caucasus, Elbrus Info Site, Mount Elbrus Ascent, National Geographic: Everest 50th Anniversary, NOVA On-line: Everest, Crown of Africa - Unlocking the Secrets of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mount Kilimanjaro - History and Links, Carstensz Pyramid, Puncak Jaya (Carstenz), Vinson Massif, Vinson Massif Climbing Expedition

Expected Pupil Preparation - The students should be able to put together research using different resources in order to prepare for a class project and presentation.

Lesson Outline -

Motivational Activity

Do Now Activity - Grammar - Pronouns (I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us, them)

Vocabulary p. 104 High Point Textbook (answer, brave, climb, hold on, lower, pull, remove, silence, tighten, weight).Volunteers will read the word plus the definition.

Story - "A Mountain Rescue" p. 105-110 High Point Textbook. Volunteers will read story. We will have a class discussion about the story.

Questions - Higher Order Thinking Skills - High Point Textbook p. 111 Think It Over #s 1-4.

(Character's Feelings) How did Rudi feel when he found the man trapped in the crevasse?

(Opinion) Was it a good idea for Rudi to try to help the man by himself? Explain.

(Details) What did the man do to help with the rescue?

(Personal Experience) Have you ever helped someone in need? What happened? How did you feel?

Cooperative Learning Group work - The class will be put into pairs of two. I will distribute a map showing the Seven Summits. I will explain that the Seven Summits are the highest mountains on the seven continents. We will talk about what the seven continents are. I will distribute a blank map where the students will have to label the seven continents and correctly label the summit that belongs on that continent.

Evaluation - I will look at each group's map and determine if they labeled everything correctly.

Follow - up - I will assign each group one of the Seven Summits and have them research their assigned mountain. They can use the Internet, Encyclopedias, etc. They will prepare posters and create a presentation. They will use the following Higher Order Thinking Skills as a guide:

What would it be like to climb your mountain?

What country or state would you be in?

What does it look like?

What special equipment would you need?

How high would you be when you reached the top?

Closure - Each group will share its presentation with he class so that everyone has a chance to learn about all of the Seven Summits.

Classroom Atmosphere - The classroom will be filled with the students' work from previous projects. It will be a comfortable environment for the students to learn. Some of the themes we already worked on are:
