Teachers and Social Media Accounts with Students Can Be a Blessing and a Curse

Cherie Bowser
Social Media has been around and growing at alarming rates among us. It is hard to imagine someone not having some type of social media account that they use to communicate with one another. Teachers are among those individuals who are using social media accounts, such as Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook. They are utilizing the social media networks as a tool to help their students gain educational support on another level. Teachers are able to communicate with their students by reminding them of homework that is due as well as upcoming tests. This also gives students an advantage to communicate with the teacher on solving a problems they may have on their homework or any other questions they may have for their teacher where other students can see the answers as well. This can be a great blessing of communication between teachers and students to help them with their education, but can be time consuming for the teacher and should be limited.

Along with the blessing of a teacher having a social media account to interact with their students, there is also a curse with the students with teachers and learning more about their personal life. There are many rules that teachers should abide by with their students when it comes to the social media account. When displaying photos, writing on any walls, or anything you may be posting on your social media website, you will want to keep it on a child's rating. If you are going to have a social media account with students it is important to display any photos that are completely modest and of good taste and never make comments that can hurt another student. This may be difficult for a teacher because he or she may never feel like they can be themselves.

Overall, teachers should have social media accounts, but should use caution or avoid all together having a student as your friend to be able to view your social media account that displays your photos and personal life. After all, there are school websites where school information can be displayed for student to view as well as email for students to ask questions. It is not worth the risk of a student knowing your private life because down the road you could possibly be accused of something you didn't do. Let your work be work and use the school facilities and resources and your private life private with the social media accounts.

Teachers should try Edmodo. It's very similar to Facebook but specifically designed for the classroom. Assignments, polls, and discussions are options, and it has a secure gradebook.

Professional boundaries need to be considered with the use of social media.

You're absolutely right about the social media. While it can be a good thing, it can also be a source of trouble if not utilized properly. If at all possible I think students and teachers alike should take advantage of whats already in place such as the school websites, etc. Good reminder Cherie.

This is really a touchy subject, isn't it? So many just give way too much info and then wonder why it turns into a nightmare.

I have a friend in my writing group who is a teacher and absolutely refuses to have a facebook account--just because of all the horror stories she's heard. And I had a writing friend who is a teacher who asked that I not tag her in photos from a writing conference I posted on facebook because she was holding a beer. Teachers have to be so careful on social networking sites...I can understand why.
