Three retired school teacher put their skills and experiences together to write and publish an excellent book aimed at new teachers. The book entitled "Teachers Tackle Box" was written with the combined skills of Sue Nothstine, Nancy Piercy and Dr. Joyce Piveral. These award winning teachers each have more than thirty years of teaching experience. The art work was created by Josh Cotter a freelance illustrator and author of a book entitled "Skyscrapers of the Midwest."
Having their own experiences as a teacher new to the classroom setting and learning of the other responsibilities that take place on a daily basis sparked the idea to write the book to for those that are beginning their career as an educator of young minds.
The book is a colorful manual that is illustrated with adorable cartoon fish that help hook the interest of the reader. The book is great for first-year teachers and others that are interested in better communication, classroom organization, student relationships and other classroom challenges.
Even though the student teaching programs allow the prospective teacher classroom time and experience, the full responsibility of a teacher is not necessarily experienced by the student teacher. The additional responsibilities may not be evident until a first-year teacher faces a classroom full of eager students on the first day of the school year. Most college courses do not prepare a prospective teacher for many of the challenges they may face with their first teaching position.
It was the experiences of the authors that inspired them to share some of their challenges to enable others to ease into their new responsibilities with less stress. It takes firsthand experience to organize a school play, to conference with parents, or to calm a difficult parent.
Following the curriculum and interacting with the students are only a part of the responsibility of a teacher. There is the bathroom breaks, recess duty, bus duty, after school activities and parent conferences. The book includes sections called "Golden Moments" which are comments, and experiences of students and former teachers.
