Prayers for Children

The kingdom of God belongs to such as these is what Jesus said about children. Kids are important to God and important to us. Teaching kids to pray does not need to be difficult but a simple way of letting them know why and how to communicate with God. The Bible is a guide for the Christian in every aspect of life and it can be used when teaching kids to pray. Read the following Bible Verses and then apply what they teach when talking with children or kids about prayer. Feel free to use this for a Sunday school lesson or at a parenting class.


Teaching Kids to Pray- Jesus wanted the children to come to Him
Mark 10:13-14
And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, "Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

Teaching Children to Pray- Pray from your Heart and the Holy Spirit will intercede for us
Romans 8:26

And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for [us] with groanings too deep for words;

Teaching Kids to Pray- God Hears our Prayers
1 John 5:14-15
And this is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

Teaching Kids about prayer- Prayer leads to Peace
Philippians 4:6-7
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Teaching Kids prayer- Pray to God any time and without ceasing
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Teaching Kids to Pray- Pray when you are sick and ask others to pray for you
James 5:13-15
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praises. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.

Kids should pray when they are scared or in trouble
Psalm 50:15
And call upon Me in the day of trouble; I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me."

Teaching Kids to Pray- Use Jesus as an example
Luke 6:12
And it was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God. Teaching Children to Pray- Spend some alone time with God
Matthew 6:6
"But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

God wants kids to come to him in prayer. From these Bible Verses we can gather the following:

1. Jesus loves Children and wants them to Pray
2. The Holy Spirit will intercede for us
3. God hears our prayers
4. Prayers will often lead to Peace
5. Pray without ceasing
6. Pray when your are sick and ask others to pray for you
7. Pray when your are in trouble or scared
8. Why should we pray? Jesus did!
9. Spend some of your prayer time alone with God
