Teaching a Preschool Child How to Write Their Name

Teaching a preschool child how to write their name takes a lot of patience and consistency, but it is well worth it when you see a preschooler beaming with pride when they have learned how to write their name. An important factor to remember when working with your preschool child is to wait until you know they are ready to learn how to write their name and look for ways to keep them motivated and excited as they are learning.

When teaching a preschool child how to write their name, begin by making a song or rhyme from the letters of the name. Kids love hearing their name sung in a song. Repeat this until he or she can say all of the letters from memory.

Next, write the name on a large piece of cardstock paper in front of your child. Say the letters as you are writing them. Use your finger and say the name pointing to each letter as you say the sound. This helps the child to see that each letter matches a sound in the name. After you have said the full name and letters with your child, cut the letters into individual cards.

Use these cards often when teaching your preschool child how to write their name, by referring to the letters when the name song is being sung, using them in games, and using them as a model when your child begins writing his or her name on paper.

Next, write the letters in front of your child on a piece of paper in pencil. Do this several times slowly and methodically allowing your child to see the movements that your hand is making. Give your child a marker and ask them to trace over the letters. Let them do this a few times several times so they will become comfortable with the lines and curves found in the letters. The goal is not perfection at this point, it is simply allowing them to focus on the shape and form of letters.

Now, use the hand over hand method, in which you place your hand on top of your child's hand guiding them as they are writing. Use this method to write the child's name several times articulating the sweep and movement of the letters. For example, for the capital letter A, I would say, "We go up for the / part of the letter, we go down for the \ part of the letter, and now we go across for the middle _ part of the letter. This makes the letter A.

Sometimes, it is helpful at this point to break the name into its letters and spend whole sessions on one letter. For example, spend one day on the first letter in the name, then spend the next day on the next letter, and so on.

It is important when teaching your preschool child how to write their name, to be patient and mindful of your child's learning styles. Make it fun, exciting, and creative. It is also important to remember to keep the times of instruction very short. Shoot for short consistent sessions over a long period of time. It is unrealistic to expect your child to write their name within a day, a week, or even a month. Sometimes this does happen, but most usually, it takes time. Teaching your preschool child how to write their name is a wonderful opportunity to not only spend quality time with your child, but also to teach them something they will be proud of.
