Use a non-toxic washable paint to paint your preschooler's hands. Finger paints should work well. Then let your preschooler wash her hands. If you want to test your child on good hand washing, tell her to wash as she normally would. If you want to practice, tell her to wash all the paint off. Make sure to paint both the front and back of your preschooler's hands, as well as in between fingers. It is a good idea to have a soft nail brush by the sink so they can practice cleaning under their fingernails.
It may take your preschooler several attempts to wash all the paint off, but your child will begin to learn what it takes to wash effectively. If your preschooler does wash all of the paint off on her first try, she is able to wash effectively. Your child may still need to practice in order to make her good hand washing techniques a habit.
Continue using this trick until you know your preschooler has developed good hand washing habits. Painting your child's hands can be a lot of fun for your child!
Good hand washing habits are important at any age. When washing your hands, you should wet your hands using warm water. Lather up with soap for at least twenty seconds, and then rinse with warm water.
Other important things you will want to teach your preschooler are ways to avoid getting germs on her hands. Teach your child to always use a paper towel to turn off the water in public restrooms, as well as opening the door with a paper towel. Another tip is when pushing elevator buttons or doorbells; you should use your knuckle instead of your fingertip. Children are more likely to put their fingers in their mouth, nose or eyes.
Soon your child will be a professional when it comes to hand washing! Remember to have fun while helping your preschooler build good hand washing habits!

Post a Commentmy kids need this
I meant to leave a comment the first time I stopped by. I think this is a great idea. My kids need to improve their hand-washing skills. :)
I've been taking classes at the local community college, and because of the Swine Flu, I mean the H1N1 Virus, there are How-To's for Proper Handwashing Techniques posted all over the place. The first thing the tell you is to wash in warm water, and then you walk into the bathroom and there is only a very cold trickle of water that comes out of the faucet and sometimes not even soap. Fortunately, there are Purell hand sanitizers pumps everywhere, and I have a small one in my purse. And I try not to touch any of the surfaces that all the 1000's of other students have....
Great advice for all of us on hand washing! Thanks!
