Teaching Your Teenager How to Manage the Cost of Gasoline

Angela Chavez
These days energy prices are soaring and the cost of gasoline does not appear as though it will be decreasing anytime soon. If you are the parent of a teenager who either drives their own car or borrows your, then you may be feeling the financial crunch of the higher cost of gas.

You could always have your teen use public transportation as an alternative. However, your son or daughter may not agree. If the bus is not an option then you may want to sit down and discuss with your teenager how they can assist with their share of the gasoline costs.

If your teen does not have a part-time job then perhaps you could assist them in finding one or perhaps they could help you out more around the house in exchange for cost of gasoline.

It is perfectly acceptable for teens these days to understand the truth of the current economic situation and how it may be personally effecting those around them.

Although, in the past most parents did not often show concern in regards to the extra gas their children used, these days money can be very tight and the current gas prices are causing many drivers to reduce the amount of gasoline they purchase.

Encourage your teenager to be responsible for supplying their own gas. Explain to your teen that not only is it more cost effective to never let the gas tank go below half a tank but that it is also can help with the maintenance. A vehicle that is allowed to run often on less than half a tank of gas can sometimes cause engine troubles.

It is not unreasonable as a parent to cut down on the amount of time that your teenager uses the car whether it be your car or their own. Many families are finding that they need to cut back on the amount of time they spend driving their vehicles. Perhaps, you may even be able to encourage your kids to use public transportation.
