Teak Garden Bench: Weather Considerations Before You Buy

Josh Ryan
A teak garden bench is a nice accessory to add to your garden, as long as you have the details figured out before you go out and spend your money. There's no waste of money like an unnecessary one. Deciding how you want them to look is great, but you also need to consider what's best for your particular environment.

All teak garden benches do not have the same weather resistance. Different models and materials will possess different strong points and weaknesses. Your climate should also be taken into consideration- what types of storms frequent your location, and how the air feels. That way, you'll choose the best teak garden benches.

Sunny areas are not well suited to certain types of teak garden benches. You've probably seen some outdoor furniture that looked like it needed to retire, or at least get a makeover. Sunlight is a very volatile reactant, and it bleaches certain materials, especially darkly colored ones. Fabric and paint are basically the only materials affected by the sun, but if that's what you have then you might consider putting your teak garden bench in a shadier spot, or get something that's UV protected.

High humidity is another frequent problem for outdoor furniture. The increased moisture in the air will equal a higher likelihood of mold and mildew. The humidity builds up in the air, and then settles as precipitation on your teak garden bench, acting like a misty rain. If the moisture doesn't dry out properly, then your teak garden bench will probably mildew. You might consider finding something mold and mildew resistant, or else avoiding fabric coverings in your teak garden bench.

Wooden teak garden furniture is going to suffer in a cold climate, whether it's dry or not. It will dry out and crack. The only way to prevent damaged wooden outdoor furniture is to lubricate it regularly and do other tedious maintenance jobs, which are avoidable if you choose the right materials.

Teak garden benches are an exciting accent to any garden, but it will not excite you for very long if you choose something that will mildew, crack or fade within a few short months. Usually, this means having to replace your teak garden benches. The best way to avoid these kinds of nuisances is to research the furniture you want to buy before making the purchase, bearing in mind the weather conditions you live in.
