Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

I never really envisioned myself as a team player, mainly because I attributed "team" to sports. Even when I started my career, I didn't really think about a team environment. I was more concerned with whether or not "I" was doing my job. Then one day as I was headed to the break room, I read a poster with the following: THERE IS NO "I" IN TEAM. Because I am pretty good at spelling, I already knew that the word team didn't have the letter "I" in it, but what I learned in years to come was instrumental in terms of career growth.

"I" is the enemy in a team environment. It doesn't matter what organization you work for, you are an integral part of a team. This means that you have a valuable role within the company and when the focus is on yourself and never about the team, your growth will be limited. You were hired because the opinion is that you would be an asset. So ask yourself this question, "What is it that I do to enhance not only my performance, but also the team's performance?" Perhaps you have surpassed others in a particular area of the business and you are able to share your knowledge. Sharing your knowledge not only helps others; it allows you to update your resume with additional experience. Maybe you are bored with your role and are interested in doing more, but aren't sure of how to proceed. This is a great opportunity to discuss additional responsibilities with your leader. Simply asking your leader for a project will: assist your leader with his/her workload, benefit the team, and of course allow you to gain additional experience! Teamwork isn't something that is optional in an organization. It doesn't matter what your role or title is, you play a major part in the bigger picture. In order for the company to meet its goals and in order for you to meet yours, you must embrace teamwork. In order for the organization's vision to live and be a vibrant part of the culture, your valuable contribution to the team is needed.
