Tears in the Dark

chanted like a charm against the dark,

bag of grounds sitting on the plate
cold brownish liquid seeping
towards an unfinished sandwich,
bite marks fresh in the bread and jelly

stamped on the napkin where he left it,
crumpled with her empty pack of cigarettes,
the tobacco smell taking him back
to the time where love meant more

than bruises in the dark places
where no one could see her rings stamped in his flesh
marking her territory for trespassers to see
the chains. He was bound by
her love carved in the tree bark.
