Teased Hair: Guide to Untangling

Get Knots and Snarls Out of Teased Hair

S. Gustafson

These days, teasing hair is as popular as using flat-irons and curlers. A surprisingly versatile style, teased hair is appropriate at everything from the office to a night out on the town. While teasing hair can make for a great fashion statement, it can also wreak havoc on your locks. Most of this damage occurs when a teased hairstyle is roughly combed out. This method of untangling teased hair causes split ends and may result in an unintentional "haircut." In order to minimize damage from teasing hair, you will need to follow a specific routine whenever you take out your hair.

Begin by removing all bobby pins and hair bands. If a hair tie gets stuck in a snarl, be gentle when removing it. You may want to work a bit of conditioner into the snarl and comb through with your fingers to encourage the hair tie to come out.

After your teased hairstyle is undone, get in the shower and rinse thoroughly. Shampoo as usual and rinse again. Apply a large dollop (about the size of a golf ball) to the hair and massage it gently for at least two minutes. Next, comb your fingers through the teased hair. If the hair remains tangled, leave the conditioner in for another two minutes and use your fingers to comb it again.

After rinsing your hair a third time, apply another dollop of conditioner to your hair and let it sit for several minutes. Use a long-toothed pick to remove remaining tangles from a one-inch section of hair. When using the hair pick, start at the ends and work your way up to the roots. Repeat with each section of hair, reapplying conditioner as necessary.

Once you've combed through all your hair with the pick, rinse a final time. Be sure to get all of the product out of your hair. After you're out of the shower, lightly spritz your hair with a spray-in conditioner. Carefully pull a wide-tooth comb through your hair. At this point, you should be able to slide the comb from the roots to the ends without it getting caught on any snarls. This is when you know that your teased hairstyle has been completely untangled.

While teasing hair can cause a lot of damage, it will be less of a problem if you follow the above steps when removing the tangles from teased hair. This way, you can enjoy the look of a teased hairstyle, knowing that your hair will still be healthy after you've combed it out.

I never quite understood why people would tease their hair, it just seemed like you're making a knot that for me would probably need to be cut off, yikes. Good tips.
