Tech I Cannot Believe I Use - Twitter

Twitters Role in My Journey as a Freelance Writer

Brett Day
I have always been a fan of social media sites and blogs like, Myspace, Facebook, Blogger and Word Press, but there is a program that I had never used, and never planned on using, and that site is Twitter.com and now, it is tech I cannot believe I use.

Update: I'm Updating Twitter

Now, there is nothing wrong with Twitter.com, nor the people who use it, I just never saw the point of a site that was for nothing more than giving micro updates about every event that might be happening in people's lives. I could not understand the fascination or the amount of time people devoted to the site.

It's an Addiction

I know to some, the site is an addiction, something that cannot not be escaped once you had stepped inside the websites four walls, and when the site would go down due to over use, there would be public outcry and rage because users could not let the world know what they were doing. Now sites like Facebook are similar, but there always seemed to be something more to twitter, and I never wanted to find out what it was.

One day in October of 2010, there I was, starting out as a newbie, in the world of freelance writing, looking for every possible outlet I could find to share my work. My fingers were striking the keys of my keyboard and before I knew it, I was directing my browser to twitter.com.

Overwhelmed

After I had created my account, I started having a look around. I could not believe the amount of people that used this site, and the amount of people who utilized twitter for more than updating their personal lives. I saw people using twitter for business and for commerce; I could not believe how big of vehicle it was for businesses to get the word out about the services that they offer.

Before long, I found many people like me, freelance writers, who had created a community on twitter. It did not take long for me to make contact with others, who had the same interests, and I could not believe how much people wanted to help. My initial fears were not warranted, I am not sure why I was so scared about using twitter, but I am glad I overcame those fears.

Follow Me, Follow You

It did not take me long to write an article and then post it to twitter, I was so excited to see what kind of response it would get, and while I did not get an instant response to my posting, I could tell from the amount of page views that article had the day after, that twitter was helping me distribute my work to many, many people.

A few days after joining twitter, I started getting legitimate followers. I could not believe people were following me because of my work; it was one of the best feelings ever.

It has been nine weeks since I joined twitter and since I started on my journey as a freelance writer. Twitter has been an essential tool for me. It has helped me get the word out about my work, but more importantly it has helped me make some great friends. I cannot imagine a life without twitter now, but it is certainly a technology that I cannot believe I use.

I was like you, didn't see or understand the purpose of Twitter. However, as time went on and curiousity got the best of me, I studied why people use Twitter for promoting content and started using Twitter - I like you received a bump in article views. In addition, I find that I can get news around the world on any topic much quicker then waiting for someone to write a whole article and I've been able to meet some nice people. There are things called Bar Camps - which is about technology usually - and people exchange twitter accounts, instead of putting the names on name tags they use their twitter accounts (same as Meet Ups) - so having a twitter account works for those who are on the faster pace. Make sure you post your articles titles at different times of the day and post often - using Hootsuite.com helps to schedule future tweets. I think I wrote and article on this awhile back. Enjoy!

I felt the same way, I was so resistant to using it. But now it is essential.

I don't use Twitter, but you do make a convincing argument for it for writers...maybe I'll give it a try.
