When traveling, it is now important to take tech gadgets with you. Of course, some people want to get away from technology and go to camp site and try to "rough it." However, even if technology is left in the car to avoid it, it is a good idea to bring the technology while traveling. At other times, the technology should come when staying at a friend's house or in a hotel.
GPS
Having GPS is a great idea because it helps you from getting lost. Perhaps you are a good driver and rarely get lost, but there can still be some strange routes and places that you may not know or are difficult to find. Having a GPS will help you to find these places. The GPS may be a separate unit or it may be built into a cell phone or other device. No matter what, the GPS can be a huge help to finding your way while traveling.
Cell Phone
You should never talk or text on a cell phone while driving. However, a cell phone can help when looking for places and in cases of emergency. Make sure that a cell phone is with you no matter if you are driving, riding a bus, or flying. Don't use the cell phone while flying as it can interfere with the plane's equipment (as was proved by the Mythbusters). However, the phone is perfect for when the flight ends. A phone can always be used while riding a bus. Then, a phone can be used when pulled into a parking lot to call the final destination for information or to find out about restaurants or nearby hotels if you do not have a hotel stay ready.
Surge Protector (Multi Outlet)
It may seem silly to travel with a surge protector, but you can never be certain when a hotel or your host may have enough outlets for your tech gadgets. If you travel with a surge protector, make sure that there are enough outlets for all of your tech gadgets. You will also be prepared in case of a storm as long as the hotel or the host as a grounded outlet and your surge protector has a grounded plug.
Laptop or Tablet PC
Whatever type of computer you use other than a desktop should be taken with you. You can communicate by e-mail or if you work online, you can easily do work instead of completely being without the ability to do work during the time that you are gone. All you need is a spot with free Wi-Fi as long as your computer is Wi-Fi enabled. There are many libraries and restaurants that now have free Wi-Fi.
Any Other Tech Gadget You Use on a Daily Basis
If there are other tech gadgets that you use on a daily basis, bring them with you. It is likely that you will feel bad that you cannot do what you usually do each day unless you are specifically trying to get away from these tech gadgets.

Really good ideas. I wouldn't have thought of the surge protector but you're right many hotels only have one outlet I can get to and use. Thanks.
