Tech Toy Holiday Gift Wish List for Christmas 2008

restlesslimbs
Geeky tech gadgets have always caught my eye. This year I've stumbled upon a few techie toys that I would not hesitate to buy if I had the funds or a generous benefactor. I've included items that are currently available to buy and I would actually want to use in real life.

The iPod Touch (second generation)

Why: The iPod touch is a true mulimedia device. It is a media player, PDA, game console, and web browser and its functions can be expanded with the many third-party applications available.

The iPod touch is kind of a cheat to add on my list because I already have one. I enjoy my first generation iPod touch and I use it daily. Still it bothers me that there is a newer generation of the touch that includes a speaker and a microphone. The new additions to the touch make it a capable VoIP telephone. Also, it would be nice to watch my video podcasts without attaching headphones or an external speaker.

Slacker Portable 4GB WIFI Internet Radio

Why: I love music but I hate buying it.

The Slacker Portable 4GB WIFI Internet Radio allows you to customize internet radio stations and stores the songs on the device itself. The fact that the music is stored on the device makes it superior to my iPod touch for internet radio because you don't have to be connected to the internet to listen to your music.

Slingbox SOLO

Why: I can take my TV with me.

The Slingbox SOLO allows you to stream your TV wirelessly to a laptop or compatible mobile phone. I'm not crazy about watching TV under most circumstances mainly because it feels like a waste of time. With the Slingbox I could watch TV from anywhere when I have the spare time.

T-Mobile G1

Why: It's new mobile technology from Google.

I like Google and its products and after seeing the G1 in person I realized that it isn't as ugly as it looks in pictures. The idea of mobile computing in a cell phone is intriguing and I'm curious about the new Android operating system.

Kindle: Amazon's Wireless Reading Device

Why: It's more than a book reader.

I am impressed with all the things the Kindle can do. According to Amazon, the Kindle uses electronic ink technology so that it is easier on the eyes than traditional computer screens. Some of the features I like are the free access to wikipedia, built in dictionary, document viewing capability, and access to Amazon's Whispernet network (no WiFi or computer required). The Kindle is not just for books but also displays magazines, newspapers and blogs.

Lenovo S10 10.2-Inch Ideapad Netbook

Why: It's a compact and cute computer I can take anywhere.

In a way I already have "mobile computers" in my iPod touch and Nokia N85 but there are times when I want a large screen and tactile feedback from my QWERTY keyboard; this is why I want a Lenovo S1. Also, looks matter and the Lenovo S10 is pretty cute and consistently praised for its excellent build quality.

Wii and Wii Fit

Why: It looks like fun and I need to get back in shape.

I really want the Wii so I can use the Wii Fit. It looks fun and it would motivate me to exercise. The Wii is the least selfish item on my list because my whole family would likely enjoy it.

That's it for my Christmas wish list and the operative word here is "wish." Chances are I won't have any of these items by Christmas but for now it's okay to dream. If I start saving my pennies now I may be able to afford something on this list before next year's holiday season.
