Tech Trends: 3-D Without Glasses and Watch Cell Phones
Companies Developing Cell Phone Watches and 3-D Television Without the Need for Glasses
Recently my Dad jumped in with both feet and bought a 3-D television that came with glasses. The experience so far has been positive, but the glasses can be a little tenuous. Well, Toshiba has been developing the technology to let viewers watch 3-D without the need for glasses since the beginning of 2011. Another technology that will be available through cell phone providers is a cell phone watch. Check your texts, e-mails, or talk on the phone all through your wristwatch and a Bluetooth headset.
3-D Without Glasses Will Be a Reality, But When?
Well, to answer this question is hard, but the technology is developing rapidly. One of the major obstacles is getting content developers, movie production companies and video game producers on board. The idea of viewing 3-D content has been around about 40 years, but it has been easier to develop technology where a viewer just slaps on a pair of glasses to view the stereoscopic images. While sales of 3-D television sets have been so-so, it seems that mainly consumers are not completely in love with the idea of wearing glasses for hours at a time while watching television. The method in which the 3-D without glasses works, will require a retooling of how the content is manufactured. To be able to see images in 3-D without wearing glasses requires the use of a Parallax barrier or an LCD additional barrier to allow for autostereo viewing of the images. Before we can even get to viewing, the signal for the 3-D images will have to be changed into series of vertical lines, unlike stereoscopic glasses. A television set manufactured for the masses probably won't materialize until late 2012 or 2013.
Your Next Cell Phone Could Be Your Wrist Watch?
The technology for cell phone watches is in the baby stages, but there are watches available now that allow you to tether your Blackberry to your watch to monitor text messages and e-mails. While that is nice, down the pipe in some prototype watches by Casio and Fossil, the ability to be a cell phone, web surfing device, and texting capabilities are all being developed. One of the best features that is being flaunted is the ability of some of these cell phone watches to create MiFi networks. This means that your watch, in connection with the cell phone signal in the watch, could create a network cloud around the watch for multiple users. Basically, the internet would go wherever you go and you could create your own hot spots!
