How to Build a Toy Vehicle

People use Legos, which include an assortment of pieces, to express their imaginations and demonstrate their building skills. In particular, the following document describes how to construct a vehicle. A small "Lego man," a toy person, who is a scuba diver, will sit in the completed vehicle. The kit contains a total of 35 pieces varying in shape and size. The parts list sorts these various pieces into color groups. Refer to the parts list periodically to assist in locating particular pieces. Also, skim over all material presented in the document to capture a glimpse of the task to complete and the necessary steps to follow. To optimize success, separate the pieces into groups by color and verify the presence of all 35 pieces according to the parts list. To further optimize success, the following paragraphs break the vehicle into separate modules, or certain components to construct. The major components include the man, the wheels, and the vehicle.

The Man

Preliminaries:

From the groups of Legos you need:

1. The legs.

2. The chest.

3. The helmet.

4. The visor.

Building the "Lego man":

1. Pick up the legs and the chest pieces.

2. Hold each piece in a different hand.

3. Connect the two pieces of the form: lower part of chest to upper part of legs. They should fit snuggly together. If attached incorrectly, make adjustments to mimic the appearance of a real person.

4. Put down the "Lego man."

5. Pick up the black visors and connect them to the helmet. Notice the two small notches in the helmet. The visor has two protrusions on each end, which directly connect to the helmet's notches.

6. Put helmet on the "Lego man's" yellow colored head.

7. Put completed "Lego man" down and put him aside.

The Wheels

Preliminaries:

From the groups of Legos you need:

1. The wheels (4 total).

2. The tires (4 total).

Building the wheels:

1. Put one yellow piece next to one black piece and repeat four times.

2. You should have four groups of two pieces.

3. Pick up one tire and one wheel.

4. Place the tire around the wheel. They should fit easily, if not, try another angle, or reverse the position of the wheel.

5. Put the completed wheel aside, and repeat three more times for the remaining groups.

6. Put the completed wheels with your completed "Lego man."

The vehicle

Preliminaries:

1. All the remaining pieces (just keep them in their separated groups).

Subcomponent: Lights

Building the lights:

1. Pick up the remaining contents of the white group, the red group, and the clear yellow group and set them apart from the remaining Legos on your table.

2. Select one clear yellow piece, one white piece, and one red piece to formulate a group. Perform twice, giving two groups containing three colors in each group.

3. Focus on one group now.

4. Pick up the clear yellow piece and the white piece, one in each hand. On the white piece, looking closely at the piece, you should see the word "LEGO." Similarly, look at the clear yellow piece and read the word "LEGO." Place the Yellow piece on top of the white piece, making sure to cover up the word "LEGO" on the white piece. The two pieces will connect firmly together.

5. Pick up the red piece and look for the word "LEGO."

6. Take the constructed piece and place the bottom part over the word "LEGO" on the red piece. These pieces will fit firmly together.

7. Set the completed light down and repeat the process, starting on step 4 for the other group of Legos, which contain the red, clear yellow, and white pieces.

8. Set these two completed lights aside (preferably, put them with the

other completed components).

Subcomponent: Frame

Building the vehicle frame:

1. Please note 6 groups remain: the remains of the black group, the mixed colored group, the orange group, the light grey group, the dark grey group, and the solid yellow group.

2. In one hand, from the black group, pick up the longest rectangular piece.

3. In the other hand, from the light grey group, pick up one of the squares, which have protrusions on each side (the completed wheels will attach here).

4. Orient each piece, the black and light grey piece, so they each clearly have the words "LEGOS" showing.

5. Notice how the long black rectangular piece has the word "LEGO" showing 12 times, and how the light grey piece shows the word "LEGO" 4 times.

6. Take the black piece and cover all four occurrences of the word "LEGO" on the light grey piece. Make sure the light grey piece's protruding parts go out to each side and have no black piece covering them. Additionally, the grey piece should go as far to one direction as possible under the black piece. Now, firmly press the pieces together.

7. Pick up the remaining light grey piece, which has a protruding part.

8. Similar to the previous steps, however, have only two occurrences of the word "LEGO" showing, when the black piece covers the grey piece. In other words, part of the light grey piece will remain uncovered by the black piece and of course the protrusions will also not have any black covering them.

9. From the black group, pick up one of the small rectangles, which has a straight bar attached.

10. The small black piece will fit firmly over the showing light grey piece.

11. The only grey now showing includes only the small protrusions from the light grey squares.

12. From the opaque yellow group, pick up the only remaining yellow square.

13. On the previous black piece just attached, firmly connect the yellow piece on top. Avoid covering the protruding bar of the black piece.

14. From the opaque yellow group, pick up one square containing wing like protrusions.

15. Firmly press the new piece over the previous yellow square. The "wings" should go to each side of the underlying long black piece.

16. From the opaque yellow group, pick up the rectangle, which contains a small circle in the middle.

17. Behind the previously placed yellow piece, firmly press the new yellow piece on to the long black piece, leaving the occurrence of the word "LEGO" to show 8 times on the black piece.

18. Pick up the remaining piece from the mixed colored group; the mostly black colored piece with some white and yellow showing.

19. Notice how one side of the mixed color piece grooves in a downward motion and the other side has a flat back. Firmly press the mixed color piece onto the yellow winged piece, making sure the flat back part of the mixed color piece faces the remaining uncovered portion of the long rectangular black piece.

20. Set the partially completed vehicle frame down for now.

21. In one hand, from the black group, pick up the smallest piece, which has a protrusion on a single small square.

22. In the other hand, from the black group, pick up the steering device, which has a small bar attached to a longer bent bar.

23. Firmly press together the small opening of the smaller black piece to the smaller bar of the larger piece.

24. The two connected black pieces should move similarly to a hinge.

25. Pick up the partially completed vehicle and attach the previously constructed piece to the small yellow bar, which has one circle in its center.

26. From the black group, pick up one rectangle, which has a straight bar attached.

27. Firmly press the black piece to the long black piece of the vehicle frame, keeping in mind to have the straight bar sticking over the end of the long black piece. Do not let the black bar stick out over the underlying grey protrusion.

28. From the light grey group pick up the remaining rectangular piece.

29. Firmly place the grey rectangle onto the partially completed vehicle, directly in front of the previously attached piece, which contains the protruding bar.

30. Notice how the light grey piece and previous black piece have formed a square.

31. Pick up the last piece of the opaque yellow group (the square with "wings").

32. Firmly press the yellow piece over the newly formed "square," allowing the protrusions of the yellow square to stick out at each side and not to overlap any portion of the partially completed vehicle, other than the underlying grey protrusions.

33. Notice the front and back parts of the vehicle. The front part includes the part with a small black bar like protrusion and the steering device. The back part of the vehicle contains a small bar like protrusion.

34. Pick up the two flippers from the orange group.

35. Notice how each flipper has a hole. Looking at the back end of the vehicle, attach one flipper to one end of the black bar, and the other flipper to the other end.

36. Pick up the remaining black piece, which has the "L" shaped protruding part.

37. Firmly press the black piece to the back of the vehicle, close to the flippers. The "L" shape should hang over the back end of the vehicle, nearly touching the flippers.

38. Pick up the remaining dark grey colored piece (the breathing apparatus for the "Lego man").

39. Looking at the back of the vehicle, close to the orange flippers, place the dark grey piece over the erect protruding black part.

40. Just in front of the breathing apparatus, firmly place the remaining light grey piece, the grey oval piece, onto the black piece in front of the breathing apparatus.

41. Place the completed vehicle frame next to the other groups of Legos previously put aside.

Preliminaries:

1. First count four groups, which include the completed vehicle frame, the "Lego man," the lights and the wheels.

Building the completed vehicle:

1. Pick up the completed vehicle frame in one hand.

2. Notice four light grey protrusions. Attach each individual wheel to exactly one grey protrusion. Give each wheel a spin to ensure proper attachment.

3. Pick up the completed lights and attach them to the grey oval on the back end of the vehicle. Adjust them as desired.

4. Lastly, firmly place the "Lego man" on the vehicle in any desired position.

In recapping the previous instructions, the first major phase included building a toy "Lego man." The next step provides instructions on building the wheels. The most complex task involves completing the vehicle through a series of smaller phases: building the lights, the frame, and then adding the previously constructed components. Ultimately, these steps lead to the completion of one vehicle with a driver.
