Technically Speaking

The Truth and Nothing but the Truth

Am I in 'love' with technology ?

I don't think so. Let me tell you, I absolutely don't understand why people watch television. Why indulge yourself to too much technology ? Staying connected to people is so important. You also have to now what is happening in the world. That is why I check my emails and read the newspaper on-line! If anybody tells you I love technology, don't believe that....and did that person take a Lie Detector Test? These days you shouldn't trust anybody without concrete evidence. Okay, let's do this, I'll tell you what a typical day for me is like and let you be the judge.

In the morning I get up with the help of an alarm clock, and use 'some' gadgets to prepare breakfast quick. It's not about my 'love' for technology, it's about time management. I exercise a little on my tread mill and take a shower with the hot water that is not heated in the sunlight !. Yes, I heard that my mother used to heat up water that way before giving us bath, but that seems so silly !

I put on clothes that comes back from the Cleaners. I purchase the matching shoes and accessories through on-line catalogs. On my way to work I drop off the children at school. In the car I listen to the music or the news. I don't forget to get coffee in Styrofoam cup at the drive through. I park at the parking lot where my card gets scanned at the gate. At office I take the elevator to save every single second I can so that I am not late punching in. You know how important it is to be ready to interact with people. I cannot stand people who are always late and stop and chat too much. You can socialize and still be on a timer, so to speak !

For the sake of my job I check my schedule on my laptop, answer the page, and talk to my patients over the phone, if needed. I also have to access WebMD and other PDR sites just for my patients. I could easily do that with the printed version only if we had that in the office. Who does the ordering at our office anyway? I think I'll have fire somebody to make a point, but then why I didn't think of that in the last 6 years?

Throughout the day I check my organizer to see what I am scheduled to do. I call to find out if my children are doing fine at school. I repeatedly check my mails and news on-line when I have down time. I don't forget to shoot 2 or 3 emails to my friends and family just to let them know that I am alive. I don't wait for their replies though because no news is good news !

I don't forget to take lunch in a timely fashion. The Microwave sits there inviting me to heat up my food. Depending on my mood I get either a can of soda or a bottle of water at the vending machine. Most of the time I bring the food that I cook and freeze over the weekends. If not, life is still not all bad. I bring one prepared meal that I buy at the superstore. You see, I have to count the calories too! I wonder what my parents did to stay fit.

I keep on looking at my watch so that I can punch out on time. Again, I hop into my car and fill gas at the station with my credit card. Just like me nobody else cares for technology. That is why there is nobody at the gas station to indulge my behavior. I help myself, fill the tank and speed off...and did I tell you how much it cost to get a full tank of gas today ? I am glad I had gotten the price update on my iPhone!

I stop at the supermarket on my way home. I buy the things from the list that I already recorded in my key ring recorder. No price tag? No problem. I check the price with the scanner carefully positioned along the aisles. No person at the register? No problem. I go to the self check out. It is not that I like technology. I just don't want to bother anyone.

Once home, I turn the washer and the dishwasher on and take a shower. By the time I am back downstairs the dishes are done, the clothes are washed and ready to go into the dryer. Did I tell you tonight I am cooking with the recipe that I got out of the Internet ? That episode was on TV last week. Actually, I used the DVR to record the whole episode. Why waste time on writing it down ? That is why I went to their web site and printed out the instructions. It should be one that can be done in 40 minutes. I have the answering machine on so that all can leave me messages. My family and friends always come first.

Meanwhile I check to make sure my son downloaded the assignment from the computer. He is a good boy. He only plays video games, watches a little TV and does homework on the computer, when needed. Next time I'll pay attention to figure out how much time he actually gets after that. I think he is social, or maybe not, who knows !

My daughter is such a darling. Once I get home she gives me a hug and goes about her business. She knows the names of all the dolls she has. She can name all of the Disney characters too. Can you imagine she already knows how to handle the VCR and DVD player? She is so smart! I have to get her one of those laptops for kids. After all, she needs to get ahead in life.

My husband also has a hectic life as I hear at the end of the day, everyday. I think we could record our conversation and play it over and over again and it would still seem news. These days I don't say 'yes', I don't say 'no'. We are all agreeable to everything. Such harmony in our lives ! Did I tell you we have been happily married for almost 14 years now ?

Before going to bed I don't forget to turn on the security system. It is not that I like technology, I just don't want to meet any new person in the middle of the night. I also set my alarm clock for the next day so that I can complete the relentless cycle of my life.

Don't get me wrong. I do like to socialize. In fact, I am holding a party this weekend. I will record the gathering with my new portable video camcorder that comes with its USB port. I can so easily upload that to my computer, edit and burn the DVD that you cannot imagine ! Technology has nothing to do with it. Memories are precious you know ! I have already sent out invitations via email for the party. I also left messages at their machines. I helped my children printout cards to send to their friends as well, I will cook and bake using Jenn-Air appliances. I absolutely do not like technology, I just want to make sure I do that at the right temperature and it comes out just perfect !

Aren't you also proud of me since I did not forget to keep my flash drive handy when I was writing this article? After all, it is so important to share feelings. You tell me, is it my fault that it's small but can remember so much? I wish I could replace my brain cells with its circuits. I'm just being honest here. Don't try to portray it as too much fascination for technology.

So, who told you I love technology ? Well, let me tell you one thing. You heard wrong. Like the rest of the world I just live a 'technology aided' life, and not a 'technology dependent' life. You have to understand the distinction. We do not have anything going here. I don't remember when, but at some point in my life I looked at it with amaze and that was it. I don't know what happened. If you call it a relationship, then I have to admit it is one-sided. Technology has helped me turn into a machine without any problem. The transition was guilt free and nobody ever held me accountable for it. Bottom line is, the technology family provides me with the company and reliability that I long for. After all, I am a human being. I cannot live alone !

Note : I know it is silly, but the the truth, for real ! I just had to write about it and get back to my writing routine.

Technology really jumped out with the Iran election protests. I started publishing articles on them 3 days before National Media because of Twitter. Great article. TY.

This was my first article of yours that I have read but I will be reading more. Just love your sense of humor. I think in technological terms these days... for example, when my husband forgets someone's name I remind him since I have become his external memory drive. When I am listen to a talk show on the radio and miss something that is said, my hand goes out to press the rewind button until I remember the radio show is not on Tivo.

Entertaining read, Pen. You say "Staying connected to people is so important. You also have to {k]now what is happening in the world." Actually, no. You don't need connection to "people," you need a reciprocal flow with certain people: family, (some) friends. You will never know what is happening through the media (see "What's News? The Numbers, The Words, and You," September 24, 07). You know the story about dropping the frog in a pot of cold water and then turning up the heat, right? It's time for all us frogs to leap out of the pot and kick the crap out of those who would boil away our minds and hearts (see "Dunes of Hypocrisy," May 10, 08). Your write is not 'silly'; it is your subconscious speaking to you...listen. Only the Best, Michael

Sorry about the typos : in the 4th line of the first paragraph...it should be "know" and not "now" ....... also missed a "to" at the bottom of the first page....

Ain't it all great? We have frequent power outages and I still panic and just sit there totally lost wondering how to function when my THINGS have no power!

LOL! What a unique read! It really got me thinking about our dependency on technology!
