You're a new parent and the baby just will not stop crying and all you want is a good night's sleep just like you used to have pre-baby. What do you do? Well, you talk to all your mommy friends and read all the parenting magazines hoping for a reprieve.

The most important technique to get a baby to sleep that I ever learned is swaddling. Swaddling your baby is wrapping your infant in a blanket snugly in a blanket. When you wrap your infant properly it restricts the infants' arms and legs from moving. Because the baby has limited movements it is less likely that the baby will disturb itself by flailing its arms in its sleep.

Another technique I used quite often when I had an infant was to take the baby on a drive in the car to rock it to sleep. The motion of the car is very soothing to many infants and it's also great for the parent to because as you lull the baby to sleep by driving you can enjoy the scenery.

Babies loved to be rocked and rocking always puts a fussy baby to sleep. Using an electric bouncing chair can give you a rest while putting your baby to sleep and doing all the work for you. Rocking is and has been one of the most effective ways of putting a baby to sleep and will usually put you infant to sleep quicker than any other method.

Aromatherapy is using scents to soothe your baby. A great calming scent is lavender and it is very calming. You can use lavender oil and in an oil burner to keep the baby's room in a calm mood to promote sleep. Another way to use lavender is to use a lavender bath wash. The warm water combined with the lavender scent is a very relaxing combination that will quit your baby in no time and have his or her dreaming sweet dreams in no time. Also, if you make this a night-time ritual your baby will also put your baby on a schedule that he or she will eventually automatically succumb to even if you decide to skip a night.

Nursing is also a technique the many mothers don't associate with putting a baby to sleep but nursing is very soothing too. It puts your baby close to you and its only natural to fall asleep after have a good meal.

Getting your baby to sleep can be stressful and difficult but with these techniques it's sure to make things easier for a new mom.
