Gadgets that Enable Seniors to Live Independently

Shirlene Alusa-Brown
As seniors get access to great healthcare and live a higher quality of life, they are now creating a demand for gadgets that enable them to live more comfortably and provide them the tools they need to live safely and independently. Many seniors are technically savvy and are not afraid to explore new technologies that are developed. This has spawned an industry dedicated to gadgets for forward thinking seniors. Below are some that I thought were really interesting:

HP Printing Mailbox - Send emails and notes to your grandparents without them needing an internet connection, or email. This is a great way to send those wonderful pictures of the grandchildren's proud moments, share your news, or just keep in touch with seniors who might not be able to access the Internet. The mailbox plugs into a regular phone line and power. Yes, it's that simple. Requires a subscription (starts at $9.99 per month or $99.99 annually). http://www.presto.com/

System Two Pro Telephone - This phone allows seniors to access the phone by using a remote control that they can carry around with them. The phone automatically turns on the speaker phone so that the senior can talk without having to pick up the phone. The speaker phone can also be activated in the event that the senior has fallen and can't get up to call for help. 911 can be automatically dialed. http://www.firststreetonline.com/product.jsp?path=-1%7C7866%7C44674&id=49359

Jitterbug Phone - Tired of all the doo-dads and other fancy but unnecessary things cellphones can do? Want a phone that is simply...well...a phone? Then this is the phone for you. The Jitterbug phone is JUST a phone. It is great for seniors because it comes with a large keypad, large screens and text, and has relatively cheap service. Cost for service starts at $10 per month, paid annually. This phone is great for seniors who just want to make quick calls, or call someone in the event of an emergency. http://www.gojitterbug.com/

E-Health Key - The E-Health key can store your medical information, details about your prescriptions, and other health information. You can access your information securely online, and change the information on your prescriptions as the need arises. Prices start at $89.90 and include a membership to MedicAlert, the company that monitors and maintains your information. In the event of an emergency, medical personnel can get access to your medical history and prescriptions, and provide the necessary care without delay. http://medicalert.org/E-Health/

Bionic Gloves - These gloves offer advanced protection for hands, and an improved grip to help people who love gardening, golf, riding, or fitness but have arthritis. The padding in the gloves is places strategically to provide extra protection when gripping things, allowing for ease of grip and tons of comfort. Prices start at $39.95. http://www.bionicgloves.com/

Viterion Telehealthcare - This gadget sends the senior's biometric information to their health provider via a regular phone link. An easier way to keep your doctor updated about your blood pressure or blood sugar level without having to make the trip to the office (unless you want to). The cost is $69 per month with a five year contract. http://www.viterion.com

MailChime - This gadget mounts in your mailbox and chimes to let you know that the mail has been delivered. It has a 300 foot range and is easy to install. http://www.smarthomepro.com/74661.htmlBeing a senior is becoming more exciting everyday. I am counting down and saving up. Who knows how many gadgets I will want to get my hands on once I am legally a senior. Until then I shall lust from a distance!

My granny prefers a different kind of phone, which is the Just5 phone. The large buttons and bright display make it easier for her to navigate the phone. This is not to mention yet the phone's personal emergency response system features. Check out this link http://www.just5.com/home.php
