Ted Koppel's Son, Andrew, Found Dead in Stranger's NYC Apartment
Andrew Koppel Dead at 40 After a Night of Drinking
The cause of the younger Koppel's death is under investigation. The 40 year old allegedly walked into a bar and made friends with a man he had never seen before. The man, Russell Wimberly, told police that he had been in a bar when Koppel walked in. Both he and Koppel had on straw hats and Koppel commented on that fact.
Koppel sat down next to Wimberly in what sounds like a long afternoon and evening of drinking. Wimberly reported Koppel was drinking whiskey and he bought drinks for his new found friend. They left the bar and went to Wimberly's female friend's apartment where they told Koppel to sleep it off.
When they went in to check on Koppel some time later, he had gotten sick and was not breathing. This is when the couple called 911. The incident and cause of Koppel's death is under investigation.
Ted Koppel has unfortunately become one of the celebrity parents who have lost a child. Marie Osmond, John Travolta, Mike Tyson, along with many other famous parents know what Ted Koppel is going through. This is a reminder, although a very grim one, that celebrities are not always handed a charmed life. No amount of fame can take the edge off of the pain that is experienced when you lose a child.
We tend to forget that celebrities are people too when it comes to crisis and tragic events. It seems that they live a life that is shielded from this type of thing happening to them.
Celebrities have children who get sick and die, they have kids that are killed in car accidents and die from drug overdoses. No matter what the cause of a child's death, a piece of your soul goes along with them. It stops life as you know it and it takes some time to learn how to live again after you bury your son or daughter.
It is also true that celebrities feel the pain and go through the guilt and sadness that the rest of us go through when losing a child, although their grief period may even be a bit tougher from all the intrusions from the media.

A child should never have to precede a parent in death. When it happens, it's the parent's greatest tragedy.
Another sad event. Thanks for the excellent report.
