Teen Dating Rules

Parenting Tips

Most parents start pulling their hair out when their son or daughter approaches them about dating. They knew the day would arrive when their teen would like to start dating. But most parents are simply not prepared to send their youngster out into the world of teen dating. After all, most parents still think of their young teen as a child they want to protect. Sure, you could keep a tight rein on that young teen and suspend their dating privileges. Placing such severe restrictions would only add more conflict to the teen and parent relationship. Consequently, the best way to remain sane is to prepare a proper set of teen dating rules. And let the teen know that if the dating rules are violated their dating privileges end until further notice!

Teen Dating Rules

Set Age Requirements. Tell that teen that it is not allowed for them to start dating at fourteen. And you do not care if all their friends started dating at that age. Acknowledge that this might be true for their friends. But that you have a different set of rules for dating. And that they are not allowed to date until they turn sixteen, seventeen, or even eighteen.

Meet The Dates. Tell your daughter or son that you would like to meet their date. This gives concerned parents the opportunity to see if the date is a responsible person. And weed out any potential problem dates with likely violent or abusive behavior. Sure, the teen might complain. Let them know before it develops into an argument that you are the parent and have issued a set of dating rules.

Setting Curfews. Establish a curfew early on. Tell your teen that you expect them to return home from the date at a certain time. Tell the teen it would be very upsetting if they were not home by that time. And that you might come looking for them. This is usually enough to make them end the date at the proper time.

Older Dates. Give the teen certain age limits. They are not allowed to date out of their age group. Teens who date older individuals are more likely to start drinking and get involved in sexual activity.

Responsible Teens. Tell the teenager your rules on drinking, and sexual activity. Ask them to think before acting on an impulse. And to think twice before getting involved with drinking, drugs, or sexual activity.
