A letter of recommendation should include the position that you had, and the strengths that you were able to contribute to the company. Another form of a recommendation letter is if a customer or a client writes you a special thank you detailing what you did, and your strength. It is an extremely good asset especially if it came from someone accountable like the president of the company you work in, and it shows how your customers think of you. It'll let the next employer know how you can handle situations, and your ability to work with customers, and co-workers. Don't take those letters for granted, as they are very special, and show your strength, and your abilities. Save them up for next time you want to apply for a job. In fact, make several copies just in case you lose it or crumple it!
Writing a letter of recommendation is an option your employer can make. Of course, they can choose to watch the week's football game instead of writing the letter. If your employer seems to hem and haw at the thought of spending their time to write a letter of recommendation, you can always offer to draft the letter for them to edit and print out on formal stationary. Trust me; if you've worked hard, and tried your best, you deserve to get a letter of recommendation from your boss as a sign of written appreciation. In fact, many times a letter of recommendation will help you land a better job with better pay. It'll also give your next employer confidence in your abilities.
To get the best letter of recommendation from your employer, there are a couple of things you may want to do. For one, wait for the right time to ask. If the company is especially busy, and your employer is loaded with work, they will not appreciate being asked to write a letter, and the overall outcome will not be as good, and selling. It's important to wait until the time is right so that writing a letter will not seem that big of a deal to them!
Also, note that a letter of recommendation can be included in your resume. For protection, make several copies of it just incase you lose it or crumple it. It is important that it is in good shape as it shows that you are an unorganized person.
I cannot stress how much a recommendation letter or a thank-you recommendation letter makes you stand out from all the other potential employees. Save them up, and include them in your resume. Chances are, you'll land a better job, and go further in your career in a shorter time.
