Teenage Entrepreneur: Governmental Issues to Deal with When Starting a Business
Be Aware of All the Legal Requirements!
To start and begin with, you'll need to file a permit to get a business license, and a store location. Different states have different ways of processing and maintaining this; however, most of the time, cities use zoning regulations which will have a particular area that you can set your store up at depending on what you want to open. If you have your heart set on an area that is not in the zoning area, you can file a permit to make a change.
Next, you need to get a permit for putting taxes on your products. All products sold need to have a tax on them that will be given to the government. In order to be a legitimate business you need to get the proper licenses and permits to put taxes on your products. It is important to check with the proper authorities to find out what percentage tax you need to charge for your product. Get all the information you need to know about taxes, and pay for the taxes on time. Sometimes taxes can work to your benefit!
Last but not least, if you sell food, you'll need a health department permit which helps insure that your food is safe for others to eat. There is a cost involved depending on the size of your company, the product that you're selling and the amount of equipment you have. The local health department will also want to inspect your business before you can start. They may also want to visit you every once in a while just to insure that you are doing your work for hygiene, and the food that you have prepared is clean and healthy.
Before starting a business, go to the city hall and ask what sort of documentation, permits, and licenses you will need. If you have family members or friends that already have businesses, you can ask them to help you out. Don't think it will be easy though. There is a lot of documentation, permits and licenses that you have to file and apply for. Not only that, you have to maintain these permits, licenses and documentation, and renew them every once in a while. There is a lot of responsibility involved.
