Teenager

Susan Elliott
He stares me down
shakes his head
throws his arms up;
heads back to his room.

I silently bite my tongue,
until I can taste
mercury fill my mouth, I swallow.

I know the pain he feels.
I know how much he hates my answer;
me.

I've been there, too
on the other side.

In moments like these
I am no longer mother, but child
heading to my own room
slamming the door.

Only now understanding
why she said no.

    Great poem! Tell Charles I know how he feels as well. I've been there, and now, I finally realize why it was a good thing that my parents said "no." :)
