Teenagers Seeking Nutmeg High Smoking Kitchen Spices

Jeffrey Weeks
An unexpected and dangerous new drug trend among teenagers has cropped up this year and it involves smoking a common kitchen spice to get a nutmeg high.

That's right, nutmeg...the flavorful holiday spice often found in cakes, cookies and other baked delights. Apparently nutmeg has some mild hallucinogenic effects. A You Tube video has become popular that shows teenagers how to abuse nutmeg by sprinkling it on rolling papers and smoking it in a way similar to marijuana.

Doctors say smoking nutmeg does induce short hallucinogenic effects, but beyond that brief high it mainly cause unpleasant side effects including headaches, nausea, dizziness and rapid heartbeat.
