Teenagers Think They Are Wise Until They Become Adults

If We Knew Then What We Know Now Our Life Would Have Changed

Sondra C
I never knew then what I know now
And if I did
I would have made changes
Along the way.

I never dreamed that I would be
Alone as I got old
and more alone
the more I aged.

Life was fun when I was young
The boys all rushed to telephone me
I had a different guy
And a different date
each day of the weekend.

Life was fun but if I had known
I would have ended up alone
I might have made a change
In the mate that I finally choose.

I thought about this awhile ago
As my thoughts went back to my youth
I remembered Lenny R who loved me
from the moment he saw me
walk into my Civics class.

We dated, we waited, we had fun.
We went out for dinner in an upscale
New York City restaurant..
And then took in a movie at the Paramount.
But......
Soon we separated, I do not remember why
But it was a short time after he took me to the Prom.

I married, had three children and a rather good life.
But then, my husband died sooner than he should have
he was only 40 years of age.
And......
I had three little girls
That I still had to raise.

One day, a few years ago I thought my life would have changed
If I had only married Lennie R, instead of the man I married.
And then....
I was invited to a School Reunion
and asked if Lennie R would be there

I wanted to see how or if he had changed
and if I would have been better off marrying him
And found out...
That Lennie had died a few years ago..
which made me see

Either way, I would have been alone
By the time I reached my age..
And so....
I guess we cannot turn back the clock
And think...What If..
Because...
The future might have been the same...
As I had soon learned.

I still would have gotten old....alone..
