Teens Go Green with These Volunteer Opportunities

C.A. Jacobs
Is your teen looking for an organization to do their community service hours? Why not steer them to one of these green organizations. Besides fulfilling his/her community service hours, he'll/she'll be helping the environment at the same time. Check out the following three organizations. We're sure there's one that will pique your teens interest.

Green Volunteer Opportunities for Teens - Surfrider Foundation
This non-profit organization, founded in 1984, aims to create awareness for the world's oceans and beaches. Volunteers are needed for beach cleanups, create awareness of how destructive plastics are to our oceans, assist in oil spill cleanups (4 hour training required), or become a water quality monitor. All volunteer positions help to increase awareness for the cause. To find a chapter near you, go here.

Green Volunteer Opportunities for Teens - Matter of Trust
Teens can actively collect hair (human and pet) to be donated to Matter of Trust. This organization, founded in 1998, takes the hair from humans and pets (all types of hair is accepted), stuffs the pieces into nylon stockings and turns them into hair mats which are beneficial in helping to clean up oil spills. Hair mats are also used to clean up wildlife affected by an oil spill. To see a YouTube video of how this works, click here.

Great place to point the kids. Don't know just what you mean by community service hours. Makes it sound like helping out is a required activity. Not that I am objecting. Force is sometimes necessary to get anyone to work. Smiles.

These are all great causes and teens should get involved. Good advice.

I think more teens need to participate in these programs. It would be as good for them as for who it helps. Great article.

My gram had a kid "volunteer" to rake her yeard last year for community service. She was impressed, he was polite and showed up on time. She offered him lemonade and cookies when he was done and he thanked her so much.
