Teeter Hang Ups: Flip You Upside Down

Jesse Schmitt
I'm sure anyone who watches any amount of basic cable television has seen these commercials for "Teeter Hang Ups." Don't be too quick to the punch in case you haven't seen these; Teeter Hang Ups is not a laundry list of some addicts crutches; they are not Vicodin, alcohol, or internet pornography. The Teeter Hang Ups is a system where you hang upside down. Like a bat. According to the Teeter Hang Ups website, "Inversion," as its known, has been "shown as an effective way to naturally decompress the spine and temporarily relive back pain."

Invented by this sprightly older guy, Roger Teeter, perhaps one would think that the Teeter Hang Ups system would be a great idea. If you have had back pain or any kind of discomfort sitting, standing, or walking, hanging upside down for an alleged "3 to 5 minutes a day," as the answer to all of your woes sounds like just the ticket. Further investigation of the Teeter website indicates even more benefit. The Teeter Hang Ups can "rehydrate joints and discs," "reduce pressure on nerve roots," "realign weight-bearing joints," "relax and stretch muscles," and "improve joint function."

Okay, so how do you do it? Well, it's this table that you strap your back to this table (the 'table' is maybe 30 inches in length); a table which is attached to this contraption, and you basically use the weight of your own body to flip yourself 180 degrees. That's it. According to the Teeter Hang Ups website, reduction of stress begins at as slight an angle as "20 degrees." But if you're in your own home and if you're doing this on your own terms, you might as well go the Full Monty. Why wouldn't you flip yourself upside down without fear of injuring yourself if you could? People do it all the time on roller coasters and in amusement parks; Teeter Hang Ups looks to be much safer than any roller coaster I have ever refused to go on.

Teeter Hang Ups has also been around for a long time. According to them (no one's ever refuted it; so far as I can tell) Teeter Hang Ups has been made continuously since 1981. Moreover the Teeter Hang Ups is the longest continuous inversion manufacturer in the world.

So there it is! A great Christmas gift for somebody you love! And if they don't like it, just make sure they know that there is a 30 day money back guarantee. While I will never go on a roller coaster, Teeter Hang Ups is the kind of out of this world experience which could turn my whole perspective up on its head.
