Teeth Whitening: The Pros & Cons of Using Trays & Gels

April Horton
There are several different ways to achieve whiter teeth. This article will discuss what the pros and cons are of using tray and gel type kits.

You can whiten your teeth several shades using whitening kits you use at home. They can be over the counter kits or kits you get directly from your dentist. These kits generally include several applications of whitener which usually is some sort of gel. They also come with trays. Some trays are better than others as some are molding for custom fit. Or else a one size fits all type of tray. Basically you will get what you pay for when it comes to teeth whitening kits. The more expensive kits may be worth it if you want custom trays. This is particularly a good idea for those with smaller mouths.

At home teeth whitening kits usually consist of some sort of tray and a gel. The gel is put on the teeth and then the tray is put over the teeth covering the gel for a specified amount of time. Usually around 10-20 minutes per applications. Most kits come with 3-6 applications.

The following are a list of pros and cons of different trays and gels.

Pros

Cheap - At home tooth whitener kits are cheap at $20 and up. This is the best way to whiten your teeth on a budget.

Convenient- It's convenient to be able to whiten your teeth at home without a dentist. This is especially good for those with busy schedules.

Easy - I have used the at home tooth whitening kits and they are simple to use if you get a decent one.

Safe - At home kits are generally effective but gentle for most people.

Custom and self forming trays - These are a plus if you get self molding trays or custom fitted trays. This helps the gel stay put on the teeth in turn doing a better job in whitening your smile.

Cons

Results - Some tooth discolorations are more stubborn. Some may not be able to lighten their teeth enough with at home kits alone. Others may just have to use them more than a couple of times over the course of several weeks.

Sensitivity - Some people experience tooth or gum pain. Others may experience canker sores. This is not super common but if you are prone to sensitive teeth and gums the take home tray and gel kits may not be for you. You may find it worth it to invest in office professional tooth whitening.

Ill fitting trays - some kits have one size fits all trays. These may not work for everyone. Some kits are better than others.

Basically in most cases the pros outweigh the cons in home tooth whitening kits. The trays and gels are pretty straight forward to use. While you won't get professional results you will get some result. It just really depends on your teeth and the product you use.
