The Addiction of Cable Television

Cherrie Webb
About two weeks ago, I broke down and finally got cable. I'd had it in the past so it wasn't new to me. My children were too young to remember us having cable though. We had VHS and DVDs for them. Not everything on cable was child friendly and our kids often stayed up late. So we got rid of cable.

Now that it's back, my family has lost its collective mind. We couldn't just have one box. We have three. Now there are over 300 channels, mostly repetitive, but still there. I balked at the movie channels. Our personal collection still boasts at least 6000 dvds. I missed the educational programming. Discovery Channel, History Channel, TLC ... things like that. Hubby liked Mythbusters and History. The children, ah yes, the children. Well they like MTV and VH1 and all those things that make no sense to me.

I am really regretting this decision. I have zombies now. The family is walking around with this glazed over look on their faces. Maybe the HULU people got ahold of them while I was in the shower. My mother was this way when cable first came out. I don't think she slept the first two weeks she had cable. She would call me at 2AM with the exploits of the Jenny Jones show or Uncle Ed or anything that just happened to be on. She wasn't accustomed to having a television where the stations never went off air.

So now my sleep-deprived,overstimulated, television cable addicted family can't figure out how the Matrix got them.

Fortunately for me, this time I took the blue pill and I can sleep
