Believable television motherhood actress #1 - Rosanne Barr
Roseanne Conner of Roseanne is a working class Mom of the 80's. She has a trial and error sort of parenting method, that makes her as believable as it gets. She lets her kids take their falls and is there to pick up the pieces afterwards. Roseanne is not fancy and talks to kids in a believable, straightforward manner. She takes the job of motherhood seriously and doesn't let too much get past her.
Believable television motherhood actress #2 - Debra Jo Rupp
Debra played the role of Kitty Forman on That 70's Show. Kitty has believable faults that make her character realistic. She drinks, smokes and has menopause issues. Her motherhood techniques show the transition women of this decade were going through, from housekeeper to breadwinner. Through it all she is a good caring mother to her children and sees more than she is given credit for. Her television husband Red is stubborn, strict and set in his ways. She often uses her motherhood instincts to admonish Red as well.
Believable television motherhood actress #3 - Patricia Richardson
As Jill Taylor on the television series Home Improvement, this savvy actress is more than believable. Jill is surrounded by men, with three boys and a testosterone loaded husband to deal with. Motherhood is tough for Jill and she assumes the role of softening the household to balance television husband Tim's all male approach to life. Jill often shows Tim aspects of parenting that he has overlooked. Her strong and authoritative motherhood approach thwarts many of Tim's childish antics.
Believable television motherhood actress #4 - Jean Stapleton
Edith Bunker almost unfailingly supports her closed minded husband Archie in the 1970's sitcom, All in the Family. Edith tows the line with her husband but when it comes to daughter Gloria, or other issues of importance, she will speak up in a believable nervous but insistent manner that causes Archie some pause. Edith is learning about the new movement toward equality from her daughter, as did most Mom's of this era. Motherhood is changing and this is reflected in Edith's character.
Believable television motherhood actress #5 - Alley Mills
Alley Mills portrayed Norma Arnold on The Wonder Years. Norma was quiet and soft spoken but had a believable expression of disapproval on her face when she was unhappy about the way things were going. Her style of motherhood was loving and caring, with an undercurrent of wisdom. Her believable relationship with her television husband Jack Arnold reflected the growing trend of talking things out prior to discipline.
