Television's Guilty Pleasures

Cassie B. Adonoson
I'm usually a big believer in television serving some sort of purpose. It should be intelligent, or at least funny. However, there are few shows that you sometimes can't help watching. Even when you know you shouldn't. Here is a list of my top five guilty pleasure television shows.

1. Girls Next Door

The first time I saw this show, I was flipping through channels and wasn't quite sure what it was. I was suddenly sucked into the odd world of the Playboy mansion on the E Channel. The feminist in me kept urging me to change the channel, but I couldn't. Watching Holly, Bridget and Kendra host a golf tournament was strangely amusing. While I wouldn't recommend watching more than one episode at a time, it is good for a laugh. And, Kendra has her own show starting in June. If you are in to that sort of thing.

2. Keeping Up With The Kardashians

I think I saw this show right after Girls Next Door one night. Word to the wise- don't turn on E if you aren't prepared to watch for quite some time. My favorite episode of this? The one where Khloe got arrested. Do I know why? Absolutely not. Is it sick? A little bit. Is it amusing? Absolutely. I think there's a fascination with those who have more money than we do. It's even better if they get into more trouble than we do too.

3. What Not To Wear

I love this show, I admit it. Personally, I think it's the best thing on TLC. It makes me feel better to see that people are dressed worse than I am. And I really enjoy watching Clinton and Stacy tear their closets apart. Here's the guilty part of it thought: I pay close attention, because I have a lot to learn. I look at my wardrobe, and sometimes think of what Stacy or Clinton would say about it. But then I usually decide I don't have the money to care about they want me to wear, but that doesn't stop me from looking. And ... I would do anything to have Nick cut my hair just once.

4. Robot Chicken

This show is on after Family Guy on the cartoon network where I live. And the first time I saw it, I was absolutely appalled. It's completely tasteless and offensive. But, unfortunately it's hilarious at the same time. Having not been a longtime viewer, I'm really not sure what the robot chicken in the opening credits is actually about, but I love the format the show is in. Fifteen minutes of quick animated skits. Enough to make you laugh, but it's over before you can get bored.

5. The Biggest Loser

I used to try and steer clear of reality television. As you can see from this list, it's been a complete failure. This show is yet another failure. I love the trainers Bob and Jillian. I love watching them whip the contestants into shape and I usually like to think I could handle it if I were a contestant. But then I realize that working out for hours and hours on end is not my idea of a good time. Still, watching those people lose weight can, and should be, an inspiration to all of us.
