Tell Congress to Pass Tier 5 Unemployment Benefits

Save the Ninety-Niners - Tier 5 to Survive!

S Gardner
Congress returns on Monday morning to continue debate on HR 4213, the "American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act", which could potentially extend filing deadlines for millions of unemployed Americans. Additional debate and a new bill to add a Tier 5 of unemployment benefits to the existing four tiers or ninety-nine weeks of unemployment assistance is also sorely and immediately needed if the long term unemployed and their families are to avoid utter poverty and homelessness.

While Republicans continue to seek concessions in already slated but unnecessary spending in exchange for payment for the much needed relief for the "ninety-niners" and "exhausties", Democrats continue to cling to their earmarks and pet projects and have begun to have reason to avoid helping the unemployed any further. (Read "Why Democrats May Not Want to Extend Your Benefits".)

This stalemate threatens to permanently impoverish nearly 5 million unemployed Americans who have no means to feed their families other than the support they receive from their unemployment checks. A whopping 1,254,300 of those are estimated to be out of benefits as early as June 26. Pulling this support from our fellow Americans will effect everyone, though, not just the unemployed, by virtue of a new wave of bankruptcies, repossessions, foreclosures and welfare recipients and a further drain of revenue to local businesses, resulting in even more unemployed - maybe even you! (Read "Five Reasons Benefits Should Be Extended")

Fortunately, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle may be beginning to soften, as hundreds of letters from the long term unemployed were read before Congressional committees last week. But it will take hundreds - thousands - more to move Congress to proactively abeit this impending national catastrophe.

If you are unemployed or you care about your fellow Americans in this unfortunate situation, please add your voice to the cries of the people and tell Congress to grant the relief of additional weeks of unemployment insurance benefits to the ninety-niners in the form of filing deadline extensions and Tier 5 benefits.

You can make your voice heard and tell your Congressmen and the White House to pass unemployment filing deadlines and add Tier 5 unemployment benefits in the following ways:

  • Without Tier 5, nearly 5 million Americans will run out of unemployment benefits this year.
  • Without Tier 5, bankruptcies, foreclosures, homelessness and more unemployment will occur.
  • Email, write or call your Congressmen and sign petitions to extend unemployment benefits.
People on both ends of the political spectrum need to realize that withdrawing unemployment benefits from people does not create jobs for them to take.

Language, seems to be so important in passing any bill. So let's put the ninety niners in the real context of what we all understand...it is TERRORISM, IT IS PIRACY AND IT IS 9-11 all over again..and it is perpitrated against hundreds of thousands of unemployed workers..whom has given much over the many years that they did have a job and were productive..not only for the Nation but for ourselves. I have fought for this country in Vietnam..put up with all of the spitting and insults when I got back..and now I have to be the target of this economic terrorism..through no fault of my own...WE NEED TO BE RESCUED...TODAY!!! STOP ATTACHING A BILL TO EXTEND WITH 60 OTHER BILLS THAT WOULD BE DISASTER FOR THE COUNTRY IF APPROVED.

    We the 99ers need help.
There will be more 99ers soon when other peoples UIB run out.Count us in the percentage of unemployed.
You go to bed all warm after a nice meal and no worries because you have income coming in.I am a 99er plus, Well its the opposite for me.We need to make English our primary language as I can't applied to jobs because if you don't speak
    Mandarian,Tagalog,Chinese,
or another countries language we can't apply. So then there is our credit report. Before my lay off my credit was good and now its horrible. Why do they have to check. That holds us back from getting a job.I didn't ask for my credit to be blacken it happened when i got laid off.I walk in to try to get food stamps and these Social workers act like its their money their giving to me.They make you feel like your not worthy of any help.Hello been working and paying my taxes. And you give a look to me of disgust. Why on earth is the state leaving our personal information
    in the hands of some

Where are the jobs.I am a 99er plus and I am tired with people playing with our lifes. It is pathetic that the reason I have no job is because I worked at a non-profit org.that recieved Calif.state funding contracts to help assist the needy in ultility assistance. The contract was taking away because the higher administation personnel stole millions od taxpayers money. What?Yes they stole and were under investigations. But believe
it or not lots of us little people still don't have jobs. And the people who stole the money are still working? Yes they are because they know people in the state. This is pathetic! Were talking millions of dollars.I am living off bread and water. That is not a joke.Living off borrowed money. Can't find a job cuz I don't speak another language then english or spanish.Shouldn't we all speak English since we live in the USA.I've applied everywhere from Jack-in the Box to agencies. You walk into state buildings and all you see are people gathering an

I'm pleading for you to pass tier 5.

  • crystal12/7/2010

Do you hear us?!?!We the people voted for you based on what you said you would do.Stood in your corner.Kept you employed! Now how about you getting in our corner and VOTING for us so that we can survive, make a difference, and regain employment. We didn't expect nor want to become jobless.I don't expect 13mos,but something to help me get back on my feet and survive!!Thank you!

  • Crystal12/7/2010

I too am a 99er.I've sent resumes, filled out apps, gone on interviews, contacted temp services.Still nothing.I'm a single mother of 3.Have not applied for state or federal assistance and trying really hard not to.I'm glad the new extensions of 2010 has passed, but what about us.The unemployment rate is 9.8%!!And still climbing.I'm sure the 9.8% doesn't include the 99ers.If so,it would be much, much higher. These state offices are overwhelmed with applications for benefits, handling cases, etc. Why aren't these states recv'g monies to help HIRE 99ers.I'd be the first in line. Also many of us 99ers credit history is down the toilet because of the lost of work.Maybe revise what and how much a potential employer can "judge" you on.I have a strong work ethic. As long as I show up on time everyday, work professional,it shouldn't matter what my credit history is.If I had a job I would be able to pay my debts and restore my credit. We need help and considerati

In out state we do not qualify for 99 weeks. Congress needs to do something about it. Apply for jobs everywhere (including walmart etc) i contacted the 4 walmarts within 30 miles of us. I was told there not hiring not even seasonal workers. Don't know what were going to do with my unemployment running out in 4 weeks. We need HELP!!! Step up and do the right thing for those who can't find a honest job.

  • Jaque10/27/2010

I am not able to get 99 weeks of benefits, so I will be an "exhaustee". I was homeless due to foreclosure on an apartment building about ten years ago, and now the trauma of that experience is looming before me as the date my unemployment runs out is quickly approaching. I feel for those who are about to loose their homes- there was no help years ago, and it's worse now. Agencies benefit their employees, and it's a cruel joke that they're called "nonprofits" because the ones who don't profit is US!
The government knows this course of action is going to cause trouble, as some states are having armed guards in the unemployment offices. They are going to shoot the victims of the system rather than extend benefits! Simpletons, the more people you allow to enter the middle class, the broader the tax base you'll have, Economic problem solved
